Water quality management of estuarine systems
1974 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the 13th Symposium on Adaptive Processes, 1974In this paper sensitivity analysis and specific optimal control theory are applied to the problem of water quality management of estuarine systems. The approach is based on the ultimate availability of a network of automatic monitoring stations along the stretch of the estuary under consideration.

In the previous chapter, the influence of man’s activities on the estuary was outlined, and we shall now go on to look at the underlying estuarine system. This system can be thought of as three interacting components, namely the physical, chemical and biological sub-systems, and it is these which we will now go on to consider.

Pathways of manganese in an open estuarine system
Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 1981The distribution of Mn was examined in the bottom sediments and water column (suspended paniculate matter) of the Laurentian Trough. Gulf of St. Lawrence. A characteristic profile of Mn with depth in the sediment consisted of a Mn-enriched surface oxidized zone, less than 20 mm thick, and a Mn-depleted subsurface reducing zone.

Harmful Elements in Estuarine and Coastal Systems
2014Estuaries and coastal zones are dynamic transitional systems which provide many economic and ecological benefits to humans, but also are an ideal habitat for other organisms as well. These areas are becoming contaminated by various anthropogenic activities due to a quick economic growth and urbanization.

A CHARACTERIZATION OF SOUTHERN AFRICAN ESTUARINE SYSTEMS
Southern African Journal of Aquatic Sciences, 1992Summary Modifications to the structure and functioning of southern African estuarine systems can be placed into two major categories; those changes that have been driven by global forces such as climatic and sea-level fluctuations, and those that have resulted from direct human interference and are of a local or regional nature.

Environmental considerations for estuarine benthal systems
Water Research, 1972Abstract Estuarine benthal systems involve complex interactions of biological, chemical, physical and hydraulic factors. A conceptual model of such systems is presented. A classification system of estuarine benthal deposits which is based on the availability of hydrogen acceptors and reactive iron is developed.

Sedimentation associated with estuarine frontal systems
Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2000Abstract Estuarine fronts may develop in several locations, across the water body as transverse, halocline-related features, as overbank spills, or where tidal flats release waters into principal tidal channels. In many estuaries longitudinal fronts originate at headlands or are associated with major sandbanks (Bowman 1988 ...

Suspended Solids Analysis of Estuarine Systems
Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division, 1981A steady-state analysis of the distribution of suspended solids in estuaries has been developed and applied to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the James and the Rappahannock Rivers. The method is based on a simplified analysis of the density-driven circulation in estuaries, resulting in a two-layered flow pattern, with the surface layer flowing ...

The Baltic-Kattegat-Skagerrak Estuarine System
Estuaries, 1993Measurements of alkalinities and calcium concentrations in the Baltic Sea indicate that there has been a slight increase in both these parameters over the last century. These increases may have been caused by the leaching of limestone by acid rain. About ten percent of the nutrients are exported from the Baltic to the Kattegat; however, very little, if

This study examines the hydrodynamic structure and estuarine-shelf exchange mechanisms at the two primary mouths of the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (PEC), a multi-mouth estuary system in Southern Brazil. The research defines the hierarchy of controls governing circulation and flow partitioning across tidal and seasonal scales.
