Climate change impacts on fish in the Baltic Sea

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Baltic Sea is a marginal sea with strong abiotic gradients harbouring fish of both marine and freshwater origin. Here we review the empirical evidence for how changes in climate variables have impacted different fish and fish communities in the Baltic Sea.

Insights into diet and niche separation in the context of prey availability between two sympatric whiprays in a tropical intertidal estuary

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Increasing evidence supports associations between various elasmobranch species and estuarine habitats, particularly during early life stages. However, with substantial knowledge gaps surrounding spatial habitat use and trophic ecology of estuary‐associated species in Australia, we cannot reliably assess the functional importance of these areas

Tracking hatchery and wild Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolt during river exit and early marine migration to assess survival, predation risk and migration speed

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Significant declines in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations across their range have prompted an increased use of hatchery supplementation programmes to support population recovery. However, concerns persist regarding the effectiveness of these programmes due to limited understanding of how hatchery‐reared salmon perform post‐release in ...

Spawning behaviour between endemic delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) and non‐native Wakasagi (H. nipponensis) in the San Francisco estuary

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract In the San Francisco Estuary, non‐native Wakasagi Hypomesus nipponensis hybridize with endemic and endangered Delta Smelt H. transpacificus, and all wild‐caught hybrids have a maternal Wakasagi parent. However, the mechanisms that facilitate or impede hybridization and explain sex‐biased hybrid asymmetry between these two species remain ...

Freshwater hydrology emerges as the strongest predictor of phenological variability in a Southeast Alaska steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) population

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Phenological variation, such as the migration trends of salmonids, may provide resilience in changing environmental scenarios, influencing individual survival and population productivity. Phenological shifts may be particularly consequential for anadromous species that rely on seasonal cues for migration between freshwater and marine habitats ...
