Race, ethnicity, culture, and science [PDF]

open access: yesBMJ, 1994
Race and ethnicity are commonly used variables in medical research. Each year about 2500 papers are indexed under the headings “ethnic groups” or “racial stocks” on Medline1; many more control for ethnic group or cultural differences during analysis. Patterns of disease, response to treatment, and the use of services are increasingly being explained in

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Elulood Läti etniliste kultuuride uurimises: liivlaste ja mustlaste lood [PDF]

open access: yesMäetagused, 2014
Even though narrating is a universal phenomenon, there is no one universal narration model, much less a universal life story model. This is also verified by the life stories from various ethnic groups that have long lived among Latvians in the Latvian ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

A review of safety risk management and optimization strategies for physical education classes in Chinese schools in heat-stress environments

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
Global warming influences rising temperatures, making outdoor physical education classes progressively challenging to organize. While heat acclimatization is essential for athletic development, the conventional emphasis on “endurance” training in Chinese

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Local Agency in Crop Booms and Busts: Insights from the Walnut Plantations of Southwest China

open access: yesMountain Research and Development
Crop boom-and-bust cycles driven by agricultural commercialization trigger dramatic agrarian change in mountain areas. There is extensive literature considering the impact of short-term crop cycles on local communities, revealing the vulnerability of ...

Ethnic and cultural diversity in Europe: validating measures of ethnic and cultural background [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, 2019
ABSTRACTSocio-cultural and ethnic origin can be a powerful predictor of social attitudes and behaviours but, unlike the situation in the classical countries of immigration such as Australia, Canada...
