We investigated the relationship between the occurrence of earthquakes along the main volcano-tectonic structures and periods of volcanic unrest at Mt Etna.

Dynamics of the eastern flank of Mt. Etna volcano (Italy) investigated by a dense GPS network
Mount Etna has developed at the intersection of two regional tectonic lineaments, the NNW–SSE trending Hybleo–Maltese escarpment, which separates the thick inland continental crust of the African platform from the Ionian Mesozoic oceanic crust, and the

The output of the Etna volcano
Nature, 1975ETNA shows two types of eruptive activity: persistent activity during which lava issues continuously at a low volumetric rate over a long time, and periodic eruptions during which lava issues at a high rate over a short time. The former is from vents at or near the summit, the latter most commonly from flank vents.

Seismic tomography of the crust underneath the Etna volcano, Sicily
Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 2002Abstract A new tomographic inversion of the velocity structure and hypocenter parameters has been carried out in the Etna area using a remarkably larger seismic dataset than used in the previous investigations. The obtained V p and V p / V s space distributions allow us to detail the already known structural features and to find new velocity ...

Geological evolution of Etna volcano
2004New stratigraphic and structural data obtained during recent geological surveys have allowed us to subdivide the almost continuous evolution of Etnean volcanism into four main phases. The oldest phase (Basal Tholeiitic) corresponds to a long period of dispersed fissure-type volcanism with tholeiitic affinity, from about 580 up to 260 ka.

In this paper we describe the experiences and results gained in the use of tiltmeters at Mt. Etna during the last twenty years. The tilt data represent a fundamental contribution to understanding of volcanic phenomena. Moreover, the tilt played an important role in analytic modelling, of the sources linked to the most important recent lateral eruptions.

Seismic tomography of Etna volcano
Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 1993Abstract A 3-D velocity model beneath Etna volcano has been obtained through inversion of P-wave arrivals of local earthquakes. About 300 seismic events distributed around this volcano from surface up to a depth of 20 km have been used to infer the P-wave velocity structure.
