Plants, Pollinators and Pheromones: Promises and Lies of Semiochemicals. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Cell Environ
ABSTRACT Pollination is traditionally regarded as a quintessential mutualism, yet many plants employ deceptive strategies to achieve reproductive success. Among the most intriguing is sexual deception, wherein flowers mimic the sex pheromones and visual signals of female insects to attract male pollinators—without providing any reward.

Pollination and plant reproduction in the Cerrado, the world's most biodiverse savanna. [PDF]

open access: yesBiol Rev Camb Philos Soc
ABSTRACT The Brazilian Cerrado is a continental‐wide biodiversity hotspot and the most species‐rich savanna ecosystem in the world. The main aspect characterising this biodiversity is that the landscape is arranged as an intricate mosaic of different plant formations, including grasslands, savannas, and forests, each harbouring distinct but ...

Untangling biodiversity interactions: A meta network on pollination in Earth's most diverse tropical savanna. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We addressed how pollination meta network with vertebrate and invertebrate species is assembled in the world's most diverse savanna and identified potential biogeographical bias within the region. We found a generalization of interactions at the meta network level but a high degree of specialization within the modules, where bees are the module ...

Evolution of five environmentally responsive gene families in a pine‐feeding sawfly, Neodiprion lecontei (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 10, October 2023., 2023
We examine the predictability of gene family size changes in the pine tree specialist Neodiprion lecontei. Overall, our results are consistent with predictable gene family expansions and contractions in response to novel selection pressures. Abstract A central goal in evolutionary biology is to determine the predictability of adaptive genetic changes ...

Functional resin use in solitary bees

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 47, Issue 2, Page 115-136, April 2022., 2022
Overall, more than 30% of bee species depend on non‐floral resources such as resin, which is used in nesting for nest structures, chemical camouflage, defence, moisture regulation, and its anti‐microbial properties. Resin usage appears to be constrained by environmental and physiological factors and may play a major role in determining the ambient nest

Long‐term (1979–2019) dynamics of protected orchid bees in Panama

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 3, Issue 12, December 2021., 2021
We gathered quantitative data on 33 species of an intact orchid bee community in lowland forest. Our two studies combined included half the months during 50 years' monitoring. Most species increased or were stable, but the declines included some of the most common and, therefore, unthreatened species.

Daily activity patterns of visits by males of four species of Eulaema (Apidae: Euglossina) to odor baits in a tropical forest fragment in Bahia, Brasil

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2009
Several studies have been conducted with bees of the subtribe Euglossina using odor baits as attractants. The objective of this study was to analyze the daily activity pattern of visits by males of four species of Eulaema - Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier ...

Nova hipótese de relacionamento filogenético entre os gêneros de Euglossini e entre as espécies de Eulaema Lepeletier, 1841 (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossini) New hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships for the genera of Euglossini, and for the species of Eulaema Lepeletier, 1841 (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Euglossini)

open access: yesActa Amazonica, 2006

open access: yesActa Amazonica, 2009
