Understanding Significance Tests From a Non-Mixing Markov Chain for Partisan Gerrymandering Claims

open access: yesStatistics and Public Policy, 2019
Recently, Chikina, Frieze, and Pegden proposed a way to assess significance in a Markov chain without requiring that Markov chain to mix. They presented their theorem as a rigorous test for partisan gerrymandering. We clarify that their ε-outlier test is

Competition Between Liquid‐Liquid Crystalline Phase Separation (LLCPS) and Liquid‐Liquid Phase Separation (LLPS) in Amyloid Fibril Colloidal Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that amyloid fibrils form nematic condensates via liquid–liquid crystalline phase separation (LLCPS). With increasing pH, this transition shifts toward disordered condensates formed through liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS), in which birefringence with lack of a coherent nematic field symmetry originates from enthalpic fibril ...

Microscale Mapping of Fiber Strain and Damage in Composite Wrinkled Laminates Using Computed Tomography Assisted Wide‐Angle X‐Ray Scattering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study combines full‐field tomography with diffraction mapping to quantify radial (ε002$\varepsilon _{002}$) and axial (ε100$\varepsilon _{100}$) lattice strain in wrinkled carbon‐fiber specimens for the first time. Radial microstrain gradients (−14.5 µεMPa$\varepsilon \mathrm{MPa}$−1) are found to signal damage‐prone zones ahead of failure, which ...

CompositIA: an open-source automated quantification tool for body composition scores from thoraco-abdominal CT scans

open access: yesEuropean Radiology Experimental
Background Body composition scores allow for quantifying the volume and physical properties of specific tissues. However, their manual calculation is time-consuming and prone to human error.

Potentialisations of a class of fully-nonlinear symmetry-integrable evolution equations [PDF]

open access: yesOpen Communications in Nonlinear Mathematical Physics
We consider here the class of fully-nonlinear symmetry-integrable third-order evolution equations in 1+1 dimensions that were proposed recently in the journal Open Communications in Nonlinear Mathematical Physics, vol. 2, 216--228 (2022).

Interlayer Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya Interaction in Synthetic Ferrimagnets for Spiking Neural Networks

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work introduces a groundbreaking integration of asymmetric magnetic structures (synthetic ferrimagnets) and antisymmetric magnetic interaction (interlayer Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction) for the first time. It addresses the critical challenge of IL‐DMI detection and shows the discovery of unprecedented analog‐like spin‐orbit torque switching ...

Wetting behaviour of nickel-based brazing alloy BNi-5a on conventionally cast and laser-melted austenitic stainless steel 316L

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Laser beam melting is an additive manufacturing process that enables the production of highly complex components. In this process, metal powder is locally melted using a laser beam and built up layer by layer to form a physical component.

A Laminating Strategy to Manyfold Enhance the Elastic Stretchability of Stretchable Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We propose a laminating strategy that laminates a thick‐polymer layer onto the thin‐ribbon metallic structure. Using serpentine structures on soft and hard substrates as representative cases, this approach increases elastic stretchability by 3.5‐fold and 2.3‐fold.

Tunable Sound Absorption via Evanescent‐Wave Coupling in Asymmetric Bilayer Metasurfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Tunable sound absorption is realized through a bilayer metasurface system governed by evanescent‐wave coupling. This work demonstrates that such evanescent‐wave coupling provides a controllable scattering channel that destructively interferes with the specular reflection.

Neper-Mosaic: Seamless generation of periodic representative volume elements on unit domains

open access: yesSoftwareX
The effective macroscopic behaviour of a material is a manifestation of the underlying microstructure and microscale processes. This renders the generation of highly accurate digital microstructure twins indispensable for multiscale simulations.
