Heat stress relief by tidally driven cold‐water bores on a coral reef atoll

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Understanding how physical transport mechanisms influence coral reef temperature dynamics is crucial for effective management. Typically, sea surface temperature (SST) is used to estimate coral heat stress, yet subsurface physical processes can significantly influence reef temperature dynamics and are imperative to consider in predictive ...

Modeling Liquid‐Mediated Interactions for Close‐to‐Substrate Magnetic Microparticle Transport in Dynamic Magnetic Field Landscapes

open access: yesParticle &Particle Systems Characterization, Volume 43, Issue 4, April 2026.
The trajectory of a single magnetic particle moving close to a polymer surface in a tailored magnetic field landscape surrounded by a static fluid is quantified using an adjustable simulation model. Varying simulation parameters give insights in key properties of magnetic particle‐based Lab‐on‐a‐chip systems for medical diagnostics.

Moving Domain Computational Fluid Dynamics to Interface with an Embryonic Model of Cardiac Morphogenesis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Peristaltic contraction of the embryonic heart tube produces time- and spatial-varying wall shear stress (WSS) and pressure gradients (∇P) across the atrioventricular (AV) canal.

Calibrated Granular‐Flow PIV From DEM Simulations: Flow‐Substrate Dynamics in Flows With Fixed and Erodible Substrates, Modeling, and Field Implications

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Granular flows are central to geophysical and industrial processes, yet their internal properties remain difficult to quantify. Understanding how energy and momentum are exchanged at the flow–substrate boundary is key to predicting their erosion and mobility.

Experimental Investigation of Microbubble Evolution in the Liquivac Multiphase Flow Pump

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 21, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
ABSTRACT This paper aims to experimentally investigate the mechanisms of microbubble characteristics evolution within an axial pump. The findings will aid in assessing the pump performance by identifying the range of bubble sizes and comparing them with the threshold size (< 300 μm). This study also provides evidence supporting the use of such pumps as

Local Visual Microphones: Improved Sound Extraction from Silent Video

open access: yes, 2017
Sound waves cause small vibrations in nearby objects. A few techniques exist in the literature that can extract sound from video. In this paper we study local vibration patterns at different image locations.

Non-Contact Smartphone-Based Monitoring of Thermally Stressed Structures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The in-situ measurement of thermal stress in beams or continuous welded rails may prevent structural anomalies such as buckling. This study proposed a non-contact monitoring/inspection approach based on the use of a smartphone and a computer vision ...
