Assessment of Competition between Fisheries and Steller Sea Lions in Alaska Based on Estimated Prey Biomass, Fisheries Removals and Predator Foraging Behaviour. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
A leading hypothesis to explain the dramatic decline of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) in western Alaska during the latter part of the 20th century is a change in prey availability due to commercial fisheries.

Alpha diversity of marine mammals of the Mexican South Pacific

open access: yesRevista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, 2018
Knowledge of the alpha diversity contributes to the determination of conservation priorities by identifying regions with high species richness and/or a large number of endemic, rare, or endangered species.

Dermatophytosis in a Steller Sea Lion (Eumetopias jubatus).

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medical Science, 1994
Serious dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes was found in a Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) at Yomiuri Land Marine Aquarium in Tokyo. The external clinical signs were extensive depilation and hyperkeratosis, as well as redness and depigmentation of the skin.

Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the Steller Sea Lion (Eumetopias jubatus)

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Pathology, 2022
Skulls from 112 Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) were examined according to predefined criteria. Of the specimens, 73 (65.2%) were from males, 29 (25.9%) from females and 10 (8.9%) were of unknown sex, with 50 adults (44.6%), 61 young adults (54.5%) and one of unknown age (0.9%). The number of teeth evaluated was 3,521.

Inflation and deflation pressure-volume loops in anesthetized pinnipeds confirms compliant chest and lungs

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2014
We examined structural properties of the marine mammal respiratory system, and tested Scholander’s hypothesis that the chest is highly compliant by measuring the mechanical properties of the respiratory system in five species of pinniped under anesthesia

Examining the effect of environmental variability on the viability of endangered Steller sea lions using an integrated population model

open access: yesEndangered Species Research, 2023
Understanding spatio-temporal variability in demography and the influence of environmental conditions offers insight into the factors underlying population dynamics.

Drag, but not buoyancy, affects swim speed in captive Steller sea lions

open access: yesBiology Open, 2014
Swimming at an optimal speed is critical for breath-hold divers seeking to maximize the time they can spend foraging underwater. Theoretical studies have predicted that the optimal swim speed for an animal while transiting to and from depth is ...

Neonatal survival of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) [PDF]

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, 2008
AbstractNeonatal survival of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) are often considered inconsequential to their population dynamics. However, observations of dead animals on rookeries and in surrounding waters suggest that early mortality is not uncommon.
