Pulmonary adiaspiromycosis in the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) inhabiting Poland

open access: yesPolish Journal of Veterinary Sciences, 2017
Abstract Adiaspiromycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by saprophytic fungi Emmonsia spp. (type Ascomycota) occurring especially in small free-living mammals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of histopathological lesions asscociated with adiaspiromycosis in the Eurasian beaver inhabiting Poland.

eDNA sampling reveals no evidence of negative effects of beaver recolonisation on the catchment‐scale distribution of migratory fish

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 7, July 2026.
This study provides novel insights into the catchment‐scale co‐distribution of beavers and migratory fish, and there was no evidence of negative effects on the catchment‐scale distribution of migratory fish species. More generally, this study highlights how catchment‐wide eDNA monitoring can be applied by environmental managers to aid decision‐making ...

A review of the historic and present ecological role of aquatic and shoreline wood, from forest to deep sea

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1091-1119, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The ecology of forests, their losses, and terrestrial wood decomposition dynamics have been intensively studied and reviewed. In the aquatic realm, reviews have concentrated on large wood (LW) in rivers and the transition from freshwater to marine environments in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, a comprehensive global synthesis

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1255-1310, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological

Population genetic structure in natural and reintroduced beaver (Castor fiber) populations in Central Europe [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Biodiversity and Conservation, 2008
Castor fiber Linnaeus, 1758 is the only indigenous species of the genus Castor in Europe and Asia. Due to extensive hunting until the beginning of the 20th century, the distribution of the formerly widespread Eurasian beaver was dramatically reduced ...

A reintroduced ecosystem engineer species may exacerbate ongoing biological invasion: Selective foraging of the Eurasian beaver in floodplains

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2020
Species reintroductions aim to re-establish populations of locally extinct, often keystone species. As a consequence of the reintroduction and protection of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber), the species has recolonized the suitable habitats (including ...

Beyond mammals: the evolution of chewing and other forms of oropharyngeal food processing in vertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1406-1462, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...

Population density of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber L.) (Castoridae, Rodentia) in the Middle Volga of Russia

open access: yesMetsanduslikud Uurimused, 2017
The article presents research on the population density of the Eurasian beaver in the large, medium and small rivers of the Republic of Mordovia. The population density of the beaver in the large rivers of the region varies from 0.45 to 0.62 colonies per

Whole System Ecohydrological Change Following Natural Flood Management and a Five‐Year Beaver Reintroduction Trial

open access: yesEcohydrology, Volume 19, Issue 4, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Once‐common beavers have been absent from the British landscape for centuries, but wild beaver populations have returned in recent years as part of reintroduction schemes, including releases into monitored enclosures. In North Yorkshire, such a release of Eurasian beavers took place in 2019.
