Objective analysis of the polar front in the Atlantic-European sector
Naukovij Vìsnik Černìvecʹkogo Unìversitetu Geografìâ, 2019The atmospheric front is one of the most complex objects in the atmosphere, which carries an important weather-forming and climatic function. Therefore, the use of methods that allow to simulate the complex structure of the front in order to determine its position in space and time, is an actual and not completely solved problem.

Atmospheric fronts are fundamental features of the weather variability in the mid‐latitudes and are frequently associated with high‐impact weather events such as hail, wind gusts or precipitation. A method to link precipitation with synoptic‐scale fronts on sub‐daily timescales is developed based on ERA‐Interim data (1979–2016).

On the basis of radar investigation, convective (I⩾0.3 mm/h) to widespread (I⩽0.3 mm/h) precipitation contribution ratios, into the total amount of precipitation, are determined, for winter fronts. The quantitative characteristics of the variability of snowfall intensity are given.
