Scale dependence of the marine atmospheric boundary‐layer response to ocean surface‐temperature variability in the EUREC4$$ {\mathrm{EUREC}}^4 $$A region

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
With a minimal physics model and a high‐resolution fully 3D simulation, we demonstrate that the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) response to sea‐surface temperature (SST) variability displays a dependence on the horizontal scales of motion.

Spatiotemporal variability of chlorophyll-a concentration in the South Brazil Bight using 25 years of multi-sensor orbital data (1998–2022)

open access: yesFrontiers in Remote Sensing
Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration is a key climate variable, as its variability is associated with meteorological and oceanographic processes. This study analyzed 25 years (1998–2022) of Chl-a data from the European Space Agency (ESA) Ocean Colour ...

The physical and synoptic‐dynamical differences between warm days, hot days, and heatwaves during summer in Victoria, Australia

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
During the day, there is composite mean cold advection in the boundary layer on warm days (WDs), hot days (HDs) and heatwaves (HWs). There is weaker surface‐sensible heating on HDs and HWs. A nocturnal jet advects warm air on HDs and HWs. There is a strong and slow‐moving upper‐level anticyclone on HWs.

Evolution of sea fog based on meteorological and oceanographic observations during FATIMA Yellow Sea campaign

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study presents a conceptual framework linking sea‐water temperature Tw gradients to the formation and persistence of sea fog in the southeastern Yellow Sea. Over cold waters maintained by tidal mixing, downward latent heat flux enhances lower‐level stability and sustains persistent sea fog, whereas over warmer waters, upward fluxes and thermal ...

Finland in NATO’s Security Policy in the Baltic Sea Region

open access: yesPolish Political Science Yearbook
Finland, as a Nordic country, is located at the intersection of the Baltic Sea region and the High North, on the NATO-Russia front line. Its role as a buffer between the West and Russia has become particularly important after the aggression of Russia ...

A Core Curriculum for European Studies in South Eastern Europe. ZEI European Studies and South Eastern Europe Papers, SEE 1, 2002 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
[From the Introduction]. The Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, launched in 1999, aims at transforming the region, which was for so long characterized by ethnic nationalism, war, and animosity, into an integral part of a united Europe.

Structural changes in the interannual variability of extreme autumn precipitation in eastern Spain and the weakening of synoptic forcing

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Total autumn precipitation in eastern Spain remains stable between 1950 and 2024, masking a substantial internal redistribution between ordinary and extreme rainfall. While torrential precipitation (Rp95) increases and ordinary precipitation (Ro) decreases, the extreme contribution index (Cext) shows a significant positive trend and a structural shift ...

Lightning electromagnetic emission location using arrival time differencing (LEELA): An introduction to the Met Office's next generation Very Low Frequency lightning location system

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This paper describes the Met Office's new lightning location system LEELA. A brief overview of the upgraded hardware and geolocation algorithms is given. LEELA has improved lightning detection capabilities, especially at night. When comparing LEELA to the previous ATDnet system against ground truths LEELA has 100% storm detection efficiency within 5 km

Low‐order system for eddy growth in the storm track

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Reanalysis data for the North Atlantic storm track are used to construct a low‐order model that optimally fits the observed interaction between the mean flow and baroclinic eddies. The resulting model is a certain type of predator–prey model. It explains various properties of the storm track, including why eddies grow linearly with the Eady growth rate,

Las interacciones atmóstera-mar en las grandes ciclogénesis mediterráneas

open access: yesMillars. Espai i Història, 2018
During the two last decades, it has ocurred a serial of great depressional situations over the east coast of Spain, obtaining successive records in the intensity and quantity of the rainfall.
