Archaeal proviruses TKV4 and MVV extend the PRD1-adenovirus lineage to the phylum Euryarchaeota
The viral lineage hypothesis predicting a common origin for viruses that infect hosts residing in different domains of life gains more support as data on viral structures accumulates. One such lineage is the PRD1-adenovirus lineage, which unites icosahedral dsDNA viruses with large facets and a double beta-barrel trimer coat protein.

Prokaryotic assemblages and metagenomes in pelagic zones of the South China Sea [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Prokaryotic microbes, the most abundant organisms in the ocean, are remarkably diverse. Despite numerous studies of marine prokaryotes, the zonation of their communities in pelagic zones has been poorly delineated.

Mitigating VFA accumulation in hydrogen‐assisted anaerobic digestion through MEC integration
Abstract BACKGROUND Biological hydrogenotrophic methanization is a promising method to improve biogas quality in anaerobic digestion systems. However, hydrogen‐assisted anaerobic digesters (AD‐H2) are prone to volatile fatty acid (VFA) accumulation and process instability.

Comparative Genomics of the Archaea (Euryarchaeota): Evolution of Conserved Protein Families, the Stable Core, and the Variable Shell [PDF]
Comparative analysis of the protein sequences encoded in the four euryarchaeal species whose genomes have been sequenced completely (Methanococcus jannaschii, Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum, Archaeoglobus fulgidus, andPyrococcus horikoshii) revealed 1326 orthologous sets, of which 543 are represented in all four species.

Bioaugmentation for Improved Recovery of Anaerobic Digesters After Toxicant Exposure [PDF]
Bioaugmentation was investigated as a method to decrease the recovery period of anaerobic digesters exposed to a transient toxic event. Two sets of laboratory-scale digesters (SRT = 10 days, OLR = 2 g COD/L-day), started with inoculum from a digester ...

Protein acetylation in archaea, bacteria, and eukaryotes [PDF]
Proteins can be acetylated at the alpha-amino group of the N-terminal amino acid (methionine or the penultimate amino acid after methionine removal) or at the epsilon-amino group of internal lysines.

Score Matching for Differential Abundance Testing of Compositional High‐Throughput Sequencing Data
ABSTRACT The class of a‐b power interaction models, proposed by [1], provides a general framework for modeling sparse compositional data with pairwise feature interactions. This class includes many distributions as special cases and enables modeling of zero entries through power transformations, making it particularly suitable for modern high ...

Assessment of Ruminal Bacterial and Archaeal Community Structure in Yak (Bos grunniens) [PDF]
The aim of this study was to determine the microbial community composition in the rumen of yaks under different feeding regimes. Microbial communities were assessed by sequencing bacterial and archaeal 16S ribosomal RNA gene fragments obtained from yaks (

This work reviewed the direct and indirect effects of fires on microbial communities and the resilience strategies microbes use to withstand high temperatures . ABSTRACT Fire, whether occurring on the surface or underground, significantly influences soil microbial dynamics by reshaping community composition, functional diversity and overall soil and ...
