There are several types of eustachian tube dysfunction, including obstruction and abnormal patency. This article presents an update on several selected areas of eustachian tube function and dysfunction, including surfactants, cleft palate, tympanic membrane atelectasis, abnormal eustachian tube patency, and long-term middle ear ventilation.

THE CONDITION of patulous Eustachian tube, while not very common, is much more prevalent than is usually supposed. It is, in all probability, frequently overlooked and has seldom been discussed. In looking through a large number of the standard textbooks on otolaryngology one can find very few that even mention it.

BECAUSE of the significance of the eustachian tube in modern middle ear surgery, a special clinic concerned with evaluation of the function of the eustachian tube was established some time ago at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. This clinic was concerned with research into basic physiological functions of the tube and their alteration by disease ...

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, 1975
Serous otitis media is the most common cause of hearing impairment. The role of lymphatic obstruction in the pathogenesis of serous otitis media is significant. A method for removal of the human Eustachian tube specimen and two techniques for identification of Eustachian tube lymphatic capillaries are described.

Eustachian tube pathophysiology
American Journal of Otolaryngology, 1983Studies of eustachian tube physiology have mainly focused on the ability of the tube to open. For this reason, impaired opening ability has been regarded as the basis of eustachian tube malfunction. Characteristic patterns have been found in pressure measurements in patients with chronic middle ear disease.

Update on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube
Current Opinion in Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, 2005The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent knowledge on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube.A clinically useful test for eustachian tube function is still lacking. Narrowing of the isthmus alone was demonstrated to be an insufficient cause of otitis media.

Eustachian Tube Bypass: Experimental Evidence for Total Eustachian Tube Substitution
Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 1978Several preliminary reports have appeared in the medical literature in respect to eustachian tube substitution1–6 since Zollner7 first described his inability to open the obstructed eustachian tube. These procedures3,5,6 have the disadvantage that the distal end of the eustachian tube substitute is inaccessible by other than another operation. This ...

Does the silastic eustachian tube prosthesis improve eustachian tube function?
The Laryngoscope, 1980AbstractThis clinical study attempts to evaluate the effectiveness of Eustachian tube function in 30 ears, 11–29 months after insertion of the Silastic® Eustachian tube prosthesis (SETP). Indications for the SETP were limited to persistent Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Posture and eustachian tube function
Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1969It has been well known for a long time that the patency of the Eusta-chian tube is affected by body position, particularly in patients with patulous tubes. The ventilatory capacity of the Eustachian tube was studied quantitatively in subjects with normal tubal function in different postures and during compression of the neck veins.
