A Characterization of All Passivizing Input-Output Transformations of a Passive-Short System [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Passivity theory is one of the cornerstones of control theory, as it allows one to prove stability of a large-scale system while treating each component separately. In practice, many systems are not passive, and must be passivized in order to be included in the framework of passivity theory.

A study to assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching program on nursing students’ knowledge of euthanasia across different colleges in Navi Mumbai, India

open access: yesMGM Journal of Medical Sciences
Background: Euthanasia, derived from the Greek term meaning “good death,” involves ending a life to alleviate suffering, particularly in cases of terminal illness or severe pain. Legal views on euthanasia vary globally, with the Netherlands and Belgium

Parallels and discrepancies between non‐native species introductions and human migration

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Biological invasions and human migrations have increased globally due to socio‐economic drivers and environmental factors that have enhanced cultural, economic, and geographic connectivity. Both processes involve the movement, establishment, and spread of species, yet unfold within fundamentally different philosophical, social and biological ...

A Geometric Method for Passivation and Cooperative Control of Equilibrium-Independent Passivity-Short Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Equilibrium-independent passive-short (EIPS) systems are a class of systems that satisfy a passivity-like dissipation inequality with respect to any forced equilibria with non-positive passivity indices. This paper presents a geometric approach for finding a passivizing transformation for such systems, relying on their steady-state input-output ...

Characteristics of meconium impaction/retention in newborn foals: From 2006 to 2024

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Background Meconium impaction/retention is a significant cause of colic in foals. Historically, limitations of both medical and surgical treatment are noted. Outcomes of meconium impaction/retention have not recently been reported. Objective To describe case characteristics and outcomes in foals with meconium impaction/retention.

Optimal robustness of passive discrete time systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
We construct optimally robust realizations of a given rational transfer function that represents a passive discrete-time system. We link it to the solution set of linear matrix inequalities defining passive transfer functions. We also consider the problem of finding the nearest passive system to a given non-passive one.

Acute severe lameness associated with proliferative bone on the dorsal middle phalanx (19 cases)

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, EarlyView.
Summary Background Injury resulting in proliferative new bone formation on the dorsal aspect of the middle phalanx (P2) has been recognised by equine veterinarians and is generally referred to as capsulitis. However, no retrospective case series has been published on the condition. Objectives To describe the clinical features, treatment, and outcome of

An Extremum-Seeking Co-Simulation Based Framework for Passivation Theory and its Application in Adaptive Cruise Control Systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
In this report, we apply an input-output transformation passivation method, described in our previous works, to an Adaptive Cruise Control system. We analyze the system's performance under a co-simulation framework that makes use of an online optimization method called extremum-seeking to achieve the optimized behavior.

From Bednets to Rocket Ships: Efficiency in the Long‐Term and Neglect for the Present

open access: yesJournal of Applied Philosophy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this article I develop an objection to Longtermism – the view that concern for the long‐term future is a moral imperative – that is often gestured at, but not fleshed out. I call this the Far‐Future Priority Objection: Longtermism may entail significant resource reallocation and systemic neglect of the worst off today.

Passivity and Evolutionary Game Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
This paper investigates an energy conservation and dissipation -- passivity -- aspect of dynamic models in evolutionary game theory. We define a notion of passivity using the state-space representation of the models, and we devise systematic methods to examine passivity and to identify properties of passive dynamic models.
