Tracking the impact of bottom trawling on benthic habitat status
Conservation Biology, EarlyView.Abstract
Bottom trawling is the most widespread physical disturbance to marine benthic habitats, yet broadscale assessments of its impact remain limited. We developed a quantitative framework to evaluate trawling effects on benthic habitats at broad spatial scales based on the sentinels of seabed (SoS) indicator.Maider Plaza‐Morlote, Ana García‐Alegre, Alberto Serrano, Ulla Fernández‐Arcaya, Antonio Punzón, Ana Rodríguez‐Rúa, Sara Roman, Ana Magro, Marina Delgado, Juan Gil, José Manuel González‐Irusta +10 morewiley +1 more sourceRisks of concealing environmental degradation
Conservation Biology, EarlyView.Abstract
Current practice seeks to conceal the visual impact of land‐use change (i.e., development). Six percent of development impact assessments in Australia and 14% of the World Bank's assessments recommend visual impact mitigation. This mitigation results in, for example, vegetated buffer strips alongside cleared agricultural areas and earthen ...Matt W. Conservation Biology, EarlyView.Abstract
Rock outcrops are geological formations that harbor a highly specialized biota adapted to harsh environmental conditions that differ from their surrounding landscapes. They are globally distributed, especially in old, highly weathered landscapes, and can function as habitat islands containing high levels of endemism and distinct evolutionary ...Luiza F. Conservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 4, August 2026.Abstract
Globally, the geographic ranges of numerous species are contracting. Identifying spatiotemporal patterns of threat impact can illuminate why species decline in some parts of their range but persist in others. We developed a correlative approach to identify species’ response thresholds and locate ecological refuge areas associated with ...Natalya M. Maitz, Michelle S. Ward, Jonathan R. Rhodes, Ben C. Conservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 3, June 2026.Abstract
Despite the crucial role of human impacts on biodiversity loss, many assessments of this loss focus on single metrics, such as species richness, and overlook the multidimensional effects of human activities. Because of its importance to ecosystem functioning, we investigated the functional diversity of medium‐ and large‐sized mammal ...Xueyou Li, Wenqiang Hu, Kenneth Otieno Onditi, Quan Li, Zhechang Hu, Ru Bai, Yang Liu, Hongjiao Wang, Xuelong Jiang +8 morewiley +1 more source‘Incoherence Is, in a Way, a Choice’: The Production of Policy Coherence at the Intersection of Uruguay's Agricultural, Environmental and Water Policies
Environmental Policy and Governance, Volume 36, Issue 2, Page 365-384, April 2026.ABSTRACT
This study explores the production of coherence between Uruguay's agricultural, environmental and water policies amidst growing tensions, which are particularly manifested in conflicts between an expanding agricultural sector and water insecurity for the broader public.Simon Ryfisch, Paula Díez Boldú, Tamara Avellán, Carlos Santos, José Sciandro, Manuel Vázquez Cirillo, Malgorzata Blicharska, Mariana Meerhoff +7 morewiley +1 more sourceVulnerability of marine megafauna to global at‐sea anthropogenic threats
Conservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.Abstract
Marine megafauna species are affected by a wide range of anthropogenic threats. To evaluate the risk of such threats, species’ vulnerability to each threat must first be determined. We build on the existing threats classification scheme and ranking system of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened ...Michelle VanCompernolle, Juliet Morris, Hannah J. Conservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 5, October 2025.Abstract
To protect and restore ecosystems at the speed and scale required to meet current environmental challenges, a greater understanding of how conservation initiatives spread from existing to new adopters is required. According to the diffusion of innovation theory, positive adopter‐to‐peer communication is a powerful driver of innovation spread ...Emily Lewis‐Brown, Hope Beatty, Katrina Davis, Ando Rabearisoa, Jeannot Ramiaramanana, Robert M.
