Evaporites, brines and base metals: Fluids, flow and ‘the evaporite that was’

Australian Journal of Earth Sciences, 1997
Waters in modern evaporite systems are marine, non‐marine, or hybrid but mineralogies in most ancient systems are not so simple that marine and non‐marine brines can be easily interpreted from the chemistry of their precipitates. Complications arise related to subsurface brine mixing and back‐reactions both at the surface and in the subsurface.

Marine Evaporites

1987
Abstract Evaporites were classified on the basis of their environmental relationships, particularly with respect to the under- and over-lying sedimentary sequences. The scope of knowledge that went into establishing this classification was limited to deposits developed in cratonic (continental crust) areas of the world. The advent of the

Properties of Evaporites

2019
The most common evaporite rocks encountered at dam sites and reservoir areas are the calcium sulfate minerals, gypsum and anhydrite, and salt, the principal chloride (halite) mineral.

The cuttability of evaporites

Bulletin of the International Association of Engineering Geology, 1982
With ever-rising labour costs, the mining engineer and the underground civil engineer look to mechanical excavation systems to increase productivity. The research described in this paper was part of a major and long term programme of experimental work carried out in the Mining Engineering Department of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Hydrocarbons and Evaporites

2016
Even though evaporites constitute less than 2 % of the world’s sedimentary rocks, one-half of the world’s largest oilfields are sealed by evaporites, the other half are sealed by shales (Fig. 10.1; Grunau 1987). Kirkland and Evans (1981) argued that evaporites overlie or seal carbonates containing an estimated 50 % of the world’s known total petroleum ...

Chapter 6 Evaporites, Evaporitic Processes and Mineral Resources

1991
Publisher Summary This chapter summarizes the varied role of evaporites in the formation of commercial concentrations of valuable materials with emphasis on geologic environments. There is a biased coverage of evaporitic sequences in North America with which the author is more familiar.
