Evolution test by improved genetic algorithm with application to performance limit evaluation of automatic parallel parking system

open access: yesIET Intelligent Transport Systems, 2021
Performance limit evaluation of automatic driving system before putting into the market is critical for driving safety. The evolution test by genetic algorithm (GA) is a method by iteratively generating new test scenarios according to the last test ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Summary of power evolution across scenarios.

open access: yes, 2023
Total evolution of empirical power for seven scenarios (see X axis) for our 4 ensemble methods and 59 state-of-the-art methods (see Y axis) at nominal level α = 0.05 (data in S12 Table). Green: total power evolution above zero. Red: total power evolution

Quantifying the Evolution of Giant Panda Habitats in Sichuan Province under Different Scenarios

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a relic species in China and a flagship species in the field of endangered wildlife conservation. The conservation of the giant panda’s habitat has gained widespread attention for this reason.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Restrictions on biological adaptation in language evolution

open access: yes, 2009
Language acquisition and processing are governed by genetic constraints. A crucial unresolved question is how far these genetic constraints have co-evolved with language, perhaps resulting in a highly specialized, and species-specific language “module”;

Dark matter casts light on the early Universe

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2018
We show how knowledge of the cold dark matter (CDM) density can be used, in conjunction with measurements of the parameters of a scenario for beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, to provide information about the evolution of the Universe before Big ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Hsp90-Induced Evolution: Adaptationist, Neutralist, and Developmentalist Scenarios [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Recent work on the heat-shock protein Hsp90 by Rutherford and Lindquist (1998) has been included among the pieces of evidence taken to show the essential role of developmental processes in evolution; Hsp90 acts as a buffer against phenotypic variation ...
