Abortion and Lamb Mortality between Pregnancy Scanning and Lamb Marking for Maiden Ewes in Southern Australia

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
The contribution of abortions to the overall mortality of lambs born to maiden (primiparous) ewes in Australia remains unclear. This cohort study aimed to quantify abortion and lamb mortality for ewe lambs and maiden Merino two-tooth ewes. Lamb mortality

Factors Associated with Mortality of Lambs Born to Ewe Hoggets

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
The reproductive performance of ewe hoggets is poorer than that of mature-age ewes due to production of fewer lambs with poorer survival. Scant data are available on the risk factors for, and causes of, the mortality for lambs born to ewe hoggets, the ...

Effect of Breeding Heavier Romney Ewe Lambs at Seven Months of Age on Lamb Production and Efficiency over Their First Three Breeding Seasons

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
This experiment examined the effect of breeding heavier ewe lambs on lamb production and their efficiency over their first three breeding seasons. Two groups of ewe lambs were bred at seven months of age at an average pre-breeding live weight of either ...

Effects of joining at 7 months, and ewe genotype, on the performance of ewes to 19 months of age and that of their progeny to slaughter

open access: yesAnimal, 2021
Two ways of reducing the cost of replacements are increasing litter size and number of litters produced; thus, the total weight of lamb carcass output per ewe lifetime. The effects of ewe genotype on the performance of ewes lambing at 1 year and of their

A cohort study of the associations between udder conformation, milk somatic cell count, and lamb weight in suckler ewes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A cohort study of 67 suckler ewes from 1 farm was carried out from January to May 2010 to investigate associations between udder conformation, udder half milk somatic cell count (SCC), and lamb weight. Ewes and lambs were observed at lambing.

The Effect of Age of Dam and Birth Rank on the Reproductive Performance of Ewes as One- and Two-Year-Olds

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
Currently, 30–43% of New Zealand sheep farmers breed their ewe lambs, but few retain the offspring as replacements for their flock. No difference in lamb production as a yearling among singletons and twins born to ewe lambs and twins born to mature ewes ...

Pinealectomy delays puberty in ewe lambs [PDF]

open access: yesReproduction, 1985
Fifteen pinealectomized and 15 unoperated ewes were exposed to constant light for 3 weeks before and 10 weeks after lambing. Fourteen pinealectomized and 15 unoperated ewes were allowed to lamb outdoors. Five ewe lambs born in constant light to the 2 groups of dams were pinealectomized at 10 weeks of age. Ewes and lambs were then returned to the field.
