Differences in lamb production between ewe lambs and mature ewes

New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research, 2020

Lamb Production from Summer Lambing Ewes

Proceedings of the British Society of Animal Production (1972), 1987
The majority of lamb production in Britain is concentrated in March and April resulting in a glut of lambs during July-September when the guaranteed price is at its lowest. Trials were carried out over 3 years to assess the feasibility of lambing hill and lowground ewes in early summer when grass is at its most productive and little concentrates are ...

VISUAL DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN EWES BY LAMBS

Applied Animal Ethology, 1978
Abstract Merino ewes that had been shorn shortly before lambing, or left unshorn, were run together from about 2 days after lambing. The behavioural responses of their lambs to alien shorn and unshorn ewes were observed in a test enclosure in which a ewe and lamb were released simultaneously from opposite ends.

Survival of fertilized ova from ewe lambs and adult ewes in the uteri of ewe lambs

Animal Reproduction Science, 1985
The cause of fertility differences between ewe lambs and adult ewes following natural oestrus were studied in Romneys. Insemination was determined by anterior vaginal swabbing. Fertilized ewe-lamb ova were returned to donor animals along with one matched fertilized adult ewe ovum and lambings were recorded.

Sexual Season in Ewe Lambs

Nature, 1951
THE sexual season of ewe lambs lasts only a quarter to a third as long as that of adults1. In ewe lambs, sexual activity starts during November and December in Cambridge (N0)2, while it starts during June in New Zealand (S0)3; and consequently the sexual season coincides with the shortest days of the year irrespective of the hemisphere.

Reduced survival of lambs from maiden ewes exposed to mature ewes pre-lambing

Small Ruminant Research, 2017
Abstract The suboptimal survival of new-born lambs is a major source of reproductive inefficiency, is often lower in maiden (first-lambing) compared with multiparous ewes, and this may be associated with poor maternal behaviour due to inexperience.

Comparison of MOET in Texel ewe lambs and yearling ewes

Proceedings of the British Society of Animal Production (1972), 1994
Combined multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) from ewe lambs could significantly increase the rate of genetic progress in sheep improvement programmes (Smith, 1986). The benefits arise from a combination of an increased number of progeny from superior females and a reduction in the generation interval.

Medicating feeds for early lambing ewes

Veterinary Record, 2012
THE antiprotozoal agent decoquinate is added under prescription to feeds for in-lamb ewes for two purposes: in early pregnancy to prevent toxoplasmosis, and in the weeks before and after lambing to prevent coccidiosis in the …
