Recognition of washed lambs by Merino ewes

Applied Animal Ethology, 1981
Abstract Ewes in six groups each of 12, that had been separated from their 2- to 8-day-old lambs for several hours, were individually presented with a choice between their own and two alien lambs. Each lamb was in a separate cage contiguous with a passageway in which the ewe was free to move.

Survival of lambs from maiden ewes may not be improved by pre-lambing exposure to mature lambing ewes

Animal Production Science, 2017
The survival of lambs born to ewes at their first (maiden) lambing is generally lower than for those born to ewes which have previously lambed, and poor maternal behaviour is a contributing factor. This study examined whether pre-lambing exposure of maiden ewes to multiparous lambing ewes would improve the survival of lambs born to maiden ewes ...

Effect of ewe ovine lentivirus infection on ewe and lamb productivity

Preventive Veterinary Medicine, 1997
We used a previously described sensitive and specific ovine lentivirus (OLV) recombinant transmembrane (rTM) protein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect anti-OLV antibodies and define OLV infection in breeding ewes from nine US Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) flocks. We estimated the production impacts of dam rTM ELISA seropositivity

Behaviour of the ewe and lamb at lambing and its relationship to lamb mortality

Applied Animal Ethology, 1975
Arnold, G.W. and Morgan, P.D., 1975. Behaviour of the ewe and lamb at lambing and its relationship to lamb mortality. Appl. Anim. Ethol., 2: 25–46. A number of behavioural traits associated with the maternal instinct of sheep were studied under paddock conditions over a range of breeds, age, climate, nutrition and locations in five lambings in south

Responses of Lambs To Model Ewes

Behaviour, 1985
Abstract Life sized models of sheep were used to determine the importance of sound and movement in eliciting orientation and approach of lambs. Dalesbred and Jacob lambs were tested at 3 weeks of age with two models, one of which appeared to be grazing while the other moved its head or bleated or both bleated and moved.

GRAZING SYSTEMS FOR EWES AND LAMBS

Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 1962
Two experiments were conducted to compare forward creep grazing of lambs with other grazing management systems for ewes and lambs. In the first experiment, forward creep grazing with and without creep feeding of concentrates was compared with rotational grazing, using 7 ewes with single lambs per plot of [Formula: see text] acres.

Relationships among ewe milk production and ewe and lamb forage intake in Targhee ewes nursing single or twin lambs.

Journal of animal science, 1994
Targhee ewes with single or twin lambs were used in four trials during early lactation through weaning to evaluate ewe milk production (MP), kilograms of lamb weaned, and forage intake by ewes and lambs. During Trial 1, ewes with lambs were individually penned, fed .45 kg of barley-ewe-1.d-1 and allowed ad libitum access to chopped alfalfa hay.
