The Misguided Adaptive EWMA Chart

Quality and Reliability Engineering International
ABSTRACTA new adaptive EWMA (AE) chart has been recently introduced for monitoring the mean of a normally distributed process. Using this variant of the AE chart, numerous papers have been written in statistical process monitoring literature. In this paper, the performance of the AE chart is reevaluated using the conditional expected delay metric.

On EWMA Charts for Time Series

1997
Several authors have studied the effect of autocorrelation on the average run length of the Shewhart, EWMA and CUSUM chart, if the underlying observations are autocorrelated (e. g. Johnson and Bagshaw [12], Bagshaw and Johnson [3], Harris and Ross [11], Maragah and Woodall [14], Alwan [2]). As it has turned out, autocorrelation has a profound impact on

Combined Shewhart–EWMA control charts with estimated parameters

Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 2010
Shewhart and EWMA control charts can be suitably combined to obtain a simple monitoring scheme sensitive to both large and small shifts in the process mean. So far, the performance of the combined Shewhart–EWMA (CSEWMA) has been investigated under the assumption that the process parameters are known.

The combined Shewhart–EWMA sign charts

Quality and Reliability Engineering International
AbstractThe Shewhart control chart is a prominent tool for identifying the changes in process parameters that are of large magnitude, however, it has reduced ability to identify the process changes of small magnitudes. On the other hand, an exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart is superior to the Shewhart chart in identifying ...

EWMA Charts for the Weibull Shape Parameter

Journal of Quality Technology, 2010
[This abstract is based on the author’s abstract.] Exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts based on the sample range of the logarithms of the data and an unbiased estimator are investigated. The average run length (ARL) of the propos..

Linking EWMA p Charts and the Risk Adjustment Control Charts

Quality and Reliability Engineering International, 2016
This paper develops an adaptive exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart that can be used as either a p chart for monitoring significant departures from in‐control non‐homogenous probabilities of failure or success or a risk‐adjusted control chart for success or failure of an event.

A R-EWMA CONTROL CHART FOR MONITORING THE PROCESS RANGE

International Journal of Reliability, Quality and Safety Engineering, 2005
This article demonstrates how a three parameter logarithmic transformation combined with an EWMA approach can be used to monitor the range of a process. The computation of the parameters of the logarithmic transformation and the control limits is explained. An easy-to-use table is provided, and illustrative examples are given.

A Johnson's Type Transformation EWMA-S2 Control Chart

2010
This article demonstrates how a four parameters (bounded) Johnson SB transformation combined with an EWMA approach can be used to monitor the sample variance of a process. The resulting chart will be called an EWMA-J-S2 chart. In this article, the computation of both the control limits and the parameters of the Johnson SB transformation of the EWMA-J ...
