Multifaceted obscurity of Thismia abei (Thismiaceae): A fairy lantern with the protologue long disregarded in practice

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Tiny, leafless fairy lanterns are easily overlooked on the forest floor. Thismia abei, endemic to Japan, persists in small, unstable populations and is listed nationally as Critically Endangered. Our recent work has revealed another, less obvious form of obscurity.

Management and incipient domestication of Chamaedorea tepejilote in agroforestry systems in Mexico

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Native wild plants are key elements in addressing global biodiversity loss and supporting sustainable food systems. We investigated how rural communities in Mexico manage Chamaedorea tepejilote, a wild palm with edible male inflorescences, by combining ethnobotanical, genetic, morphological and ecological approaches.

Antiferromagnetic Chains in a Monolayer of Molecular Qubits Assembled on Graphene

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
This work explores the deposition onto graphene of a dithiazole‐based molecular qubit, [Cu(dttt)2], (dttt− = 1,3,2‐dithiazole‐4‐thione‐5‐thiolate), under ultra‐high vacuum conditions. Analytical techniques, including STM, XPS, and X‐ray absorption, reveal the molecular arrangement and magnetic interactions, emphasizing the role of vdW interactions in ...

Rational Design and Development of Organic Afterglow Nanoparticles for Image‐Guided Interventions

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
This review outlines the rational design, synthesis, and standardized characterization of organic afterglow nanoparticles for biomedical imaging and therapy. Mechanistic insights into chemically initiated electron exchange luminescence and reactive oxygen species‐mediated processes are connected to molecular engineering and nanoparticle fabrication ...

Forty years of captive breeding in Przewalski's horse: pedigree‐based insights into population growth, sex ratio, and inbreeding

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Long‐term captive breeding programs play a critical role in the conservation and reintroduction of endangered species, yet they face persistent challenges related to demographic structure and genetic management. The Przewalski's horse Equus przewalskii, once extinct in the wild, represents a global model for conservation breeding supported by pedigree ...

Beyond the enclosure: a decade of monitoring reveals altered traits in a European ground squirrel colony with implications for a recovery program

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
Effective integrated conservation programs critically depend on high‐quality animals from ex situ breeding, specifically those that are genetically diverse and physically healthy, yet insufficient scientific rigor in husbandry protocols can lead to unintended, detrimental consequences that compromise reintroduction success.
