Genomic structure and ex situ conservation of the North American grapevine Vitis labrusca

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The North American wild grapevine species Vitis labrusca is an important source of disease resistance and climate resilience traits for breeding new grapevine cultivars. To ensure its continued use in breeding, V. labrusca must be accurately identified and genetically diverse material must be conserved.

Planning for ex situ conservation in the face of uncertainty

open access: yes, 2016
Ex situ conservation strategies for threatened species often require long-term commitment and financial investment to achieve management objectives. We present a framework that considers the decision to adopt ex situ management for a target species as ...

Mapping arboretum research: Trends, gaps, and opportunities for biodiversity conservation, society, and climate resilience

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Arboreta bridge people and nature while conserving tree biodiversity, supporting climate resilience, and advancing environmental education. This study maps over a century of available and indexed arboretum research, uncovering trends, knowledge gaps, and opportunities for collaboration.

Transcriptomic stress responses in Vaccinium spp. F1 hybrids: Implications for temperature‐resilient cranberry breeding using a crop wild relative

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Climate extremes threaten the sustainability of cranberry production, a culturally and economically important North American crop. This study demonstrates that wild cranberries (Vaccinium oxycoccos) harbor genetic variation that may enhance cold stress resilience when introduced into cultivated cranberry through hybridization.
