Temporal Trends in Respiratory Infection Epidemics Among Pediatric Inpatients Throughout the Course of the COVID-19 Pandemic From 2018 to 2023 in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. [PDF]

open access: yesInfluenza Other Respir Viruses
ABSTRACT Background Nonpharmaceutical interventions for coronavirus disease (COVID‐19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, during the pandemic altered the epidemiology of respiratory viruses. This study aimed to determine the changes in respiratory viruses among children hospitalized from 2018 to 2023.

Clinically relevant DNA viruses in pregnancy

open access: yesPrenatal Diagnosis, Volume 43, Issue 4, Page 457-466, April 2023., 2023
Abstract Infections by DNA viruses during pregnancy are associated with increased health risks to both mother and fetus. Although not all DNA viruses are related to an increased risk of complications during pregnancy, several can directly infect the fetus and/or cause placental dysfunction. During Non‐Invasive Prenatal Testing analysis, the presence of

Infections with Herpes simplex and Varicella zoster virus

open access: yesJDDG: Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft, Volume 20, Issue 10, Page 1327-1351, October 2022., 2022
Summary Human herpes viruses belong to the DNA viruses and are among the most common viral pathogens. Currently, eight human herpes viruses have been characterized. Primary infection is typically followed by virus latency. Viral reactivations are more often symptomatic than primary infections and lead more often to medical consultation.

Herpesvirus infections in adenoids in patients with chronic adenotonsillar disease

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, Volume 94, Issue 9, Page 4470-4477, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Adenoids and tonsils have gained interest as a new in vivo model to study local immune functions and virus reservoirs. Especially herpesviruses are interesting because their prevalence and persistence in local lymphoid tissue are incompletely known.

Cytomegalovirus seropositivity is associated with reduced risk of multiple sclerosis—a presymptomatic case–control study

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neurology, Volume 28, Issue 9, Page 3072-3079, September 2021., 2021
The association of cytomegalovirus and multiple sclerosis was assessed in a case–control study of presymptomatically collected samples. Cytomegalovirus seropositivity was found to reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis by 30%. Interactions between cytomegalovirus, Epstein–Barr virus and human herpesvirus 6A serostatus further impact the risk ...

Age-specific sex-related differences in infections: a statistical analysis of national surveillance data in Japan. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
BACKGROUND: To prevent and control infectious diseases, it is important to understand how sex and age influence morbidity rates, but consistent clear descriptions of differences in the reported incidence of infectious diseases in terms of sex and age are
