Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Analysis of solid cancer incidence risk among the population exposed in the East Urals Radioactive Trace over 1957–2009

open access: yesРадиационная гигиена, 2017
Objective: Assessment of solid cancer incidence risk in the Chelyabinsk subcohort of the East Urals Radioactive Trace over the 53-year period of follow-up with use of the individualized doses accumulated in the soft tissues calculated on the basis of the

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Contemporary risk of hip fracture in type 1 and type 2 diabetes:a national registry study from Scotland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The purpose of this study was to compare contemporary risk of hip fracture in type 1 and type 2 diabetes with the nondiabetic population. Using a national diabetes database, we identified those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who were aged 20 to 84 years

DEPENDENCE OF THYROID CANCER MORBIDITY FROM GENDER, AGE AND EXPOSURE DOSE FOR THE POPULATION AFFECTED IN CONSEQUENCE OF THE CHERNOBYL ACCIDENT

open access: yesРадиационная гигиена, 2015
The paper presents an assessment of radiation factor role for the thyroid cancer forming at persons exposed by the Chernobyl accident at the age from 0 to 18 years.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Risk analysis of the mortality from the diseases of the circulatory system in the Ural cohort of emergency-irradiated population for the years 1950–2015

open access: yesРадиационная гигиена, 2019
The paper describes for the first time the results of the radiation effect study using the example of the analysis of circulatory system disease mortality in newly established cohort combining the population exposed in 1950–1960 due to 2 radiation ...

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Hazard regression model and cure rate model in colon cancer relative survival trends: are they telling the same story?

open access: yes, 2008
Hazard regression models and cure rate models can be advantageously used in cancer relative survival analysis. We explored the advantages and limits of these two models in colon cancer and focused on the prognostic impact of the year of diagnosis on ...
