A Methodology to Integrate Closed‐Cycle Heat Pumps into Batch Distillation Columns

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
Batch distillation often cannot use vapor recompression due to contamination risks in food and pharma. This study proposes a design for integrating closed‐loop heat pumps using natural fluids. Results show significant energy savings, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional setups.

Impact of Distillation Column Design on Potential for the Integration of Mechanical Vapor Recompression

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
Mechanical vapor recompression integration in distillation is analyzed, focusing on feed preheating and column pressure drop. Binary methanol–water and benzene–toluene separations are studied to identify optimal designs, which are further assessed in a bioethanol vacuum distillation sequence regarding energetic, ecological, and economic performance ...

A New Numerical Approach for Exergy Targets and Losses Determination in Sub-Ambient Processes

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2017
Sub-ambient processes such as a refrigeration system are a highly energy intensive area in chemical industries. Refrigeration systems require a high level of process cooling using a combination of compression and expansion operations.

“Exergy based analysis of economic sustainability” [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Exergy is presented here as the physical prime-mover of economic systems, and an exergy based concept of value is proposed in this paper. The main exergy fluxes are identified as those carried by raw exergy (primary sources), raw materials, usable exergy

Transcritical Carbon Dioxide Charge-Discharge Energy Storage with Integration of Solar Energy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
New and improved energy storage technologies are required to overcome non-dispatchability, which is the main challenge for the successful integration of large shares of renewable energy within energy supply systems.

Building Thermal Exergy Analysis

open access: yes, 2016
The energy and environmental impacts due to energy consumption in the building sector are one of the main topics in the global energy field. A building is an energy system that uses energy sources in order to maintain its functionality and to ensure thermal indoor comfort for its occupants.

Rethinking Climate Change on the Role of Human Power Generation, Alternative Perspectives, Potential Solutions, and a Plea for Action

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
All energy matters Let us broaden the discussion on solutions to climate change. Greenhouse gases have upset the delicate equilibrium of the Earth's energy balance. Consequently, all sources of heat affect the temperature of the Earth. Although the amount of additional heat generated by humans is a fraction of that produced by the sun, it is generated ...

The Exergy Losses Analysis in Adiabatic Combustion Systems including the Exhaust Gas Exergy

open access: yesEntropy, 2022
The entropy generation analysis of adiabatic combustion systems was performed to quantify the exergy losses which are mainly the exergy destroyed during combustion inside the chamber and in the exhaust gases. The purpose of the present work was therefore:
