The effects of diameter and location of drain pipes on the uplift force and exit hydraulic gradient for a gravity dam are investigated. A numerical model of a gravity dam is simulated using the finite element method. The results indicate that drain pipes under a gravity dam reduce the uplift force and exit hydraulic gradient.

Abstract In the design of hydraulic structures, cutoff walls are needed to reduce uplift force (U) and the exit hydraulic gradient (GR). Usually two cutoff walls are required; an upstream cutoff wall is used to reduce the resultant of uplift force and a downstream cutoff wall is used to reduce the exit hydraulic gradient.

Gradient Deconfliction-Based Training For Multi-Exit Architectures
2020 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2020Muiti-exit architectures, in which a sequence of intermediate classifiers are introduced at different depths of the feature layers, perform adaptive computation by early exiting “easy” samples to speed up the inference. In this paper, we propose a new gradient deconfliction-based training technique for multi-exit architectures.

Sheet pile cofferdams are temporary structures used widely to support the excavation pits in sandy soils. Double-walled and circular cofferdams are two of the commonly seen cofferdam shapes. One of the main concerns pertaining to these sheet pile cofferdams is the excavation base stability against piping failure. Factor of safety against piping failure
