Expatriates are people who live in a foreign country, but this article confines itself, in the main, to British expatriate librarians and lecturers in librarianship working in English‐speaking Black Africa. Most of the examples are taken from Nigeria, where I have worked as a librarian and as a lecturer since 1975.

The stressor may occur from the micro-environment, the macro-environment, or the mega-environment. The effects of stress are frequently due to predictable reactions such as insecurity, distress, and homesickness.

This paper reviews the historical aspects of expatriate mental health, and comments on the paucity of literature in the medical and psychiatric journals. Data obtained from 397 expatriate probands examined during overseas service are described. It was noted that there was a high incidence of affective and adjustment disorders.
