Operational adequacy studies of a PV-based & energy storage stand-alone microgrid

open access: yes, 2015
This paper presents a probabilistic approach in the modeling of stand-alone microgrids to predict their operational adequacy performance considering uncertainty of energy storage system (ESS), photovoltaic system (PVS) and conventional generator (CG ...

Multiyear and multi-criteria AC Transmission Expansion Planning model considering reliability and investment costs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
One of the major concerns in Power Systems is surely related with their reliability. Long-term expansion planning studies traditionally use the well-known deterministic "N-1" contingency criterion.

A VDS-NSGA-II algorithm for multiyear multiobjective dynamic generation and transmission expansion planning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
The chapter develops a dynamic biobjective model for the generation expansion planning together with the transmission system expansion planning. A virtual database-supported nondominated sorting genetic algorithm, known as “VDS-NSGA-II,” is designed to ...

Syrinx anatomy and vocalizations in New World vultures (Aves: Cathartidae): Implications for avian vocal evolution

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
New World vultures are the only avian clade proposed to lack a syrinx and have been described as non‐vocal. Using dissection, diceCT, and histology, we demonstrate that cathartid vultures have novel syringeal features that form a syrinx and vocal characterization reveals that they produce more complex vocalizations than previously reported.

Do deepfakes, digital replicas and human digital twins justify personality rights?

open access: yesThe Journal of World Intellectual Property, EarlyView.
Abstract Unauthorised deepfakes are deeply problematic, from the spreading of misinformation to non‐consensual pornographic content. This paper asks whether deepfakes, digital replicas and human digital twins justify personality rights. To address this question, it examines the harms that deepfakes can cause through disinformation, demeaning content ...

Mathematical Optimization of Hybrid Renewable Systems in Isolated Zones and Performance Assessment of the Real System in La Miel (Panama)

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Background/Objectives: This paper presents a bi-objective mathematical programming model for sizing hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs) in isolated mini-grids and compares the optimized solutions with the first-year operation of a real system ...

Democratic Values in Citizen Participation: What Citizens Prioritize in Participation

open access: yesPolicy Studies Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Citizen participation is often initiated to strengthen democracy. While participatory innovations are typically assessed through normative frameworks emphasizing democratic values, little is known about which of these values are prioritized by citizens.

Spinning reserve estimation in microgrids

open access: yes, 2012
Spinning reserve (SR) is an important resource which can safeguard power systems without involuntary load shedding. Increasing the SR requirement can reduce the probability and severity of loss of load. However providing SR has a cost.
