Experimental research on spatial distribution of overtopping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The overtopping empirical formulas calculate the discharge only at the top of the crest of a coastal protection structure. On the other hand, the tolerable overtopping discharges are defined at certain points behind the crest where the total overtopping ...

Income, education, and policy priorities

open access: yesPolitical Science Research and Methods
Are people's priorities associated with their income and education levels? There is a long history in political science of claims that priorities are driven by economic interests, but also that low-income and low-education people fail to prioritize their

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Standard operating procedures (SOP) in experimental stroke research: SOP for middle cerebral artery occlusion in the mouse [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Recently, systematic reviews have found quantitative evidence that low study quality may have introduced a bias into preclinical stroke research. Monitoring, auditing, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) are already key elements of quality control ...

Experimental Research on the R134a/CO2 Cascade Refrigeration System

open access: yesZhileng xuebao, 2013
A test rig of the R134a/CO2 cascade supermarket refrigeration system has been built up to get a comprehensive understanding of its performance. The results show that the maximum COP of the system occurred when the condensing temperature of the CO2 cycle ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
