Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Criminal profiling as expert evidence

open access: yes, 2014
This chapter looks at profiling as expert evidence. While not allowed in many jurisdictions, others have been more receptive to this type of expert testimony.

Autophagy and mitophagy in pancreatic β‐cell homeostasis and their involvement in diabetes pathophysiology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the role of autophagy and mitophagy in maintaining pancreatic β‐cell function and homeostasis. We discuss how genetic defects affecting these pathways contribute to the development of type 1, type 2, monogenic, and gestational diabetes. We further explore their potential as therapeutic targets. Created in BioRender.

Expert opinion in decision-making: a systematic review of methods and the INTEGRITY framework for incorporating expert consultation into research

open access: yesResearch Integrity and Peer Review
Experts and their opinions can play a pivotal role in research for decision-making, particularly where empirical data are limited or uncertain. However, the methods by which expert input is solicited, synthesised, and applied in research often lack ...

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

Surveillance cameras, identification and expert evidence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Tony Ward discusses the use of expert evidence in comparing digital images derived from surveillance camera photographs with facial images of a suspect, arguing that while such evidence has serious limitations, the courts are right to admit it, but they ...

The Reliable Application of Fingerprint Evidence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In November 2017, a state appellate court did something almost unprecedented: It held that a trial judge made an error by admitting testimony on latent fingerprinting. In State v.

Synergistic perspectives—How single‐molecule biophysics complement biochemical understanding

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how ensemble biochemistry and single‐molecule approaches are complementary, outline commonly used single‐molecule techniques, and illustrate their relevance through two representative case studies: chromatin organization by SMC complexes and pathway choice during DNA double‐strand break repair.
