Abstract This chapter argues that an important virtue of externalism about justification is that it helps to explain the value of knowledge. It also develops and expands upon the line of argument that is taken to be the most promising argument for externalism, one that appeals to morally loaded cases.

IEEE Multimedia, 1995
The upcoming MHEC standard, under development by ISO's Multimedia Hypermedia Experts Group, defines a system-independent encoding of the structure information used for storing, exchanging, and executing multimedia presentations. This article describes the building blocks of an MHEG-encoded presentation through a running example. Our experience involved

Inequalities in incomes and wealth have increased in advanced countries, making our economies less dynamic, our societies more unjust and our political processes less democratic. As a result, reducing inequalities is now a major economic, social and political challenge.

Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Intercultural collaboration, 2010
This paper presents four criticisms of positivistic research in cross-cultural human-computer interactions. An outline of a theory of cultural influences in socio-technical systems is then presented. Based on the ecological approach to perception and action and the philosophical approach to intersubjectivity, the dual aspects of interaction in socio ...

Explaining Explanation For “Explainable Ai”
Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, 2018What makes for an explanation of “black box” AI systems such as Deep Nets? We reviewed the pertinent literatures on explanation and derived key ideas. This set the stage for our empirical inquiries, which include conceptual cognitive modeling, the analysis of a corpus of cases of "naturalistic explanation" of computational systems, computational ...

Fifty years ago Francis Crick and James D. Watson proposed the double helix model for the DNA molecule. They believed they had, as Crick put it, discovered the "secret of life," and many agreed. But in the intervening years, science has marched--sometimes leaped--forward, and now the question "What is life?" must be posed once again. In this accessible

Medical Hypotheses, 1995
This paper presents the hypothesis that the general factor, g, which emerges from psychometric batteries and which has been equated with general intelligence, is the result of a physical brain feature which enhances neural network efficiency and is determined for the brain in general.

What does explainable AI explain?
2023Machine Learning (ML) models are increasingly used in industry, as well as in scientific research and social contexts. Unfortunately, ML models provide only partial solutions to real-world problems, focusing on predictive performance in static environments.

Explaining the actions of the explainers
Erkenntnis, 1985Explaining has been seen by many as the paradigm display of rationality on our part, and rationality as our most distinctive attribute. To be an explainer is, along the way, to be one who can generalize, infer, predict, offer justifications, conform to the rules of evidence, and, in order to offer more ambitious explanations, one must be a theorizer ...
