Challenges of determining frequency and magnitudes of explosive eruptions even with an unprecedented stratigraphy

open access: yesJournal of Applied Volcanology, 2019
Through decades of field studies and laboratory analyses, Volcán de Colima, Mexico has one of the best known proximal eruption stratigraphies of any volcano, yet the frequency and magnitudes of previous eruptions are still poorly resolved.

Ash aggregation in explosive volcanic eruptions [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2013
Eruption dynamics are sensitive to ash aggregation, and aggregates are commonly found in eruptive deposits. While ash dispersal and associated hazards are sensitive to aggregation, few experiments have been conducted on this phenomena using natural materials across the diverse range of conditions expected in volcanic flows. We have isolated two regimes,

CO2-crystal wettability in potassic magmas. Implications for eruptive dynamics in light of experimental evidence for heterogeneous nucleation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The volatile content in magmas is fundamental for the triggering and style of volcanic eruptions. Carbon dioxide, the second most abundant volatile component in magmas after H2O, is the first to reach saturation upon ascent and depressurization.

Magma recharge and mush rejuvenation drive paroxysmal activity at Stromboli volcano

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Petrological studies along with volcano monitoring data relate the unusual 2019 explosive activity at Stromboli volcano (Italy) to deep magma recharges up to a few days prior the eruption and a direct link between deep and shallow magma reservoirs.

Eruptions from Under-Ice Explosions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
Abstract : Eruptions from under-ice explosions were recorded by a standard video camera and an ordinary motor-driven 35-mm camera. The records give the dimensions and velocities of the eruptions. Velocity, diameter, and height are related to charge depth and the results are compared with data for ordinary underwater explosions in ice-free water.

Report on potential sampling biases in the LaMEVE database of global volcanism

open access: yesJournal of Applied Volcanology, 2017
We investigate whether the disproportionate contribution of individual volcanoes in the Large Magnitude Explosive Volcanic Eruption database (LaMEVE) potentially compromises the treatment of LaMEVE as a globally representative database of volcanic ...

Role of volatiles in highly explosive basaltic eruptions

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2022
The increase in mass eruption rate due to the presence of volatiles in explosive basaltic eruptions is greatly dependent on the type of volatile, according to numerical modelling. CO2 has a very limited effect unless injected from an external source.

A model for large-scale volcanic plumes on Io: Implications for eruption rates and interactions between magmas and near-surface volatiles. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Volcanic plumes deposit magmatic pyroclasts and SO2 frost on the surface of Io. We model the plume activity detected by Galileo at the Pillan and Pele sites from 1996 to 1997 assuming that magmatic eruptions incorporate liquid SO2 from near-surface ...

Dissolved Gas and Metal Composition of Hydrothermal Plumes From a 2008 Submarine Eruption on the Northeast Lau Spreading Center

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Extrusion of lava onto the seafloor transports heat and mass from the lithosphere to the hydrosphere and the biosphere. During this process, large amounts of dissolved gases can be released into the ocean as hydrothermal plumes and serve as nutrients for

Models of ice melting and edifice growth during subglacial basaltic eruptions. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Models of the early stages of basaltic eruptions beneath temperate glaciers are presented that consider the evolving sizes of volcanic edifices emplaced within subglacial cavities.
