Identification of Earthquakes and Explosions Using Amplitude Ratios: The Vogtland Area Revisited

Pure and Applied Geophysics, 2002
Identification of seismic events is a major scientific issue in the framework of verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Of special interest in this context is the identification of the numerous low-yield mining or blasting events, especially those occurring in the same area as earthquakes, such as the Vogtland area in the ...

Signal-to-noise ratio and spectra of explosion-generated Rayleigh waves

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1962
abstract This preliminary theoretical study is basically concerned with the estimation of the depth of an explosive source from a knowledge of the radiated Rayleigh wave. Details are given of the dependence of the amplitude spectrum on the explosive yield, depth of burial, horizontal range, and the elastic parameters of the medium. It is

Forensic utility of isotope ratio analysis of the explosive urea nitrate and its precursors

Forensic Science International, 2011
Urea nitrate (UN) is an improvised explosive made from readily available materials. The carbon and nitrogen isotope composition of UN and its component ions, urea and nitrate, could aid in a forensic investigation. A method was developed to separate UN into its component ions for δ(15)N measurements by dissolving the sample with KOH, drying the sample,

Cornstarch explosion experiments and modeling in vessels ranged by height/diameter ratios

Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, 2001
Abstract Height to diameter ( H / D ) ratio is one of the important parameters affecting premixed particle–air combustion characteristics. This paper focuses on the behavior of cornstarch combustion in closed vessels with changed H / D ratios and fixed volumes; and a combustion model is employed to simulate the experiments.

The influence of the charge-to-mass ratio of the charged water mist on a methane explosion

Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, 2016
Abstract To study the influence of the charge-to-mass ratio of a charged water mist on a methane explosion, the induction charging method was used to induce charge on a normal water mist; a mesh target method was employed to test the charge-to-mass ratio of its droplets.

Ratio of the cavity volumes in confined explosions of concentrated and linear charges

Journal of Mining Science, 1999
Numerical calculations are performed to obtain a formula showing that confined cavities obtained from the explosions of linear charges are smaller in volume than those obtained from the explosions of concentrated charges containing the same mass of explosive.

An investigation and application of the crustal transfer ratio as a diagnostic for explosion seismology

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1967
Abstract Because the spectral behavior of seismic first arrivals contains much information about the nature of the transmission path, the Thomson-Haskell matrix formulation for the response of layered systems has received much attention.

Effects of length-to-diameter ratio on hydrogen-doped methane explosion

The influence of length-to-diameter ratio on hydrogen-doped methane explosion in confined pipelines was investigated through a combined experimental and theoretical approach. Experimental results indicate that the number of flame acceleration events increases with the increase of the length-to-diameter ratio.
