Reducing Polypharmacy in Extended Care

In this 5-year prospective study, we determined the feasibility of reducing polypharmacy in a long-term care institution by a systematic review of the pharmacy records. At 6-month intervals, the computer printout of all medications prescribed to patients in a 550-bed institution was reviewed.

Rehabilitation in the Extended Care Facility

Rehabilitation can be readily carried out in an extended care facility. A technique is presented for accomplishing this objective by organizing existing personnel within the facility into a rehabilitation team which is goal-oriented. The Barthel Index serves as an objective measurement of the patient's progress.

Scabies in the Extended Care Facility

ABSTRACT: Scabies occurred in three nursing homes (two in Missouri and one in Pennsylvania) where the diagnosis was obscured by a lack of the usual clinical signs. Topical steroids can aggravate scabies and help to confirm the diagnosis; treatment with lindane lotion is successful, provided all patients and health personnel are treated.
