A reinforcement learning approach with masked agents for chemical process flowsheet design

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 71, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract This study introduces two novel Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents for the design and optimization of chemical process flowsheets (CPFs): a discrete masked Proximal Policy Optimization (mPPO) and a hybrid masked Proximal Policy Optimization (mHPPO).

Model Development and Simulation of Anaerobic Digestion Process Using Aspen Plus

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Cleaner energy, particularly biogas, is urgently needed. Biogas is generated via anaerobic digestion (AD), decomposing organic materials without oxygen. AD simulation models are appreciated for their cost‐effectiveness and predictive accuracy. This study creates a process model with Aspen Plus to simulate AD and biogas production.

Separation of Isoprenol‐Dimethyldioxane Mixture by Vacuum and Extractive Distillation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
This study investigates the isolation of commercial isoprenol, a by‐product of large‐scale isoprene production. The challenge lies in separating isoprenol from an azeotropic mixture with 4,4‐dimethyldioxane‐1,3. The separation processes considered are vacuum and extractive distillation.

Optimal design of reduced vapor transfer dividing wall structures with and without heat integration

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 70, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract A dividing wall column (DWC) is a prime example of process intensification, whereby significant energy and cost savings can be achieved for some systems compared to operation in conventional design of two columns in series. It has been theorized that the vapor and liquid thermal coupling streams in the DWC could be replaced by liquid‐only ...

Liquid‐Liquid Phase Equilibrium of Glycerolysis Precursors: Experimental and Modeling Study

open access: yesChemical Engineering &Technology, Volume 47, Issue 1, Page 208-216, January 2024.
Glycerol and oleic acid are mutually immiscible components. Their rigorous reaction produces glycerol esters and water. Such mutual immiscibility of glycerol and free fatty acids limits glycerolysis, a reaction capable of upgrading waste‐derived oils. The glycerol solubility in the fatty phase increases when glycerol esters are added to the immiscible ...

Biogas Production Optimization in the Anaerobic Codigestion Process: A Critical Review on Process Parameters Modeling and Simulation Tools

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
Many operational parameters, either discretely or collectively, can influence the biodegradation performance towards enhancing biogas yield and quality. Among the operating parameters, organic loading rate (OLR), inoculum‐substrate ratio, and carbon‐nitrogen ratio (C/N) are the most critical parameters in the optimization and enhancement of biogas ...

Thermodynamic modelling of the solubility in piperazine (PZ) promoted aqueous solutions of methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) using the extended UNIQUAC

open access: yesChemical Engineering Research and Design
The solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) of the binary systems piperazine (PZ)-H2O and methyldiethanolamine (MDEA)-H2O and the ternary system MDEA-PZ-H2O were measured in this work using a modified Beckmann setup. 63 new SLE data points were created for PZ-H2O, MDEA-H2O, and MDEA-PZ-H2O.
