Mycotic aneurysm of the external carotid artery

AbstractMycotic aneurysms of the extracranial carotid arteries are extremely rare. A case is reported of a false aneurysm of the left external carotid artery. This developed secondary to cervical lymphadenitis which did not settle with high dose antibiotic therapy.

Bilateral External Carotid Artery Aneurysms

A 60-year-old female was found on a physical examination to have bilateral palpable pulsatile neck masses. She denied local pain, cranial nerve compressive symptoms, or symptoms of cerebral ischemia. Duplex ultrasonography demonstrated bilateral 1.5 x 2.2 cm external carotid artery aneurysms.

The external carotid artery (ECA) arises from the common carotid bifurcation at the C4 vertebral level. A more proximal or distal origin can occur. Variants of the level of the carotid bifurcation are described in Chap. 2. These variants also involve indirectly the origin of the ECA. The ECA may originate directly from the aortic arch.
