External Fixation as a Secondary Procedure
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1982Twenty-two patients were treated by external skeletal fixation as a secondary procedure after failure of primary management with other modes of treatment. Fourteen of these cases were infected at presentation. The average duration from the time of injury to the application of external fixation was 17 months.

External Fixation of Tibial Fractures
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2015External fixation for definitive or initial management of tibial fractures has a long history, with pin-to-bar external fixation being the standard of care for definitive management of tibial fractures. However, the use of this method lessened because of the increased popularity of intramedullary nailing and drawbacks associated with external fixation.

Nigerian Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma, 2004
An external fixator is very useful in the management of open fractures. A typical external fixator has provision only for a specific diameter of pins. This is a description of a simple external fixator which can accommodate any diameter of pins. KEY WORDS: External fixator, any diameter, pins Nigerian Journal of Orthopaedics and Trauma Vol.3(1) 2004 ...

Nursing standard (Royal College of Nursing (Great Britain) : 1987), 2009
As a newly qualified staff nurse working on a trauma ward, I see patients with a variety of fractures. It is often difficult to distinguish between the different types of fractures and the methods of fixation.

Biomechanics of the Ilizarov External Fixator
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1992The Ilizarov external fixator exhibits more isotropic mechanical properties in bending and nonlinear axial stiffness than do unilateral and bilateral external fixators. Each frame element--wire size, tension, and orientation, as well as ring type--contributes to overall frame rigidity and stability.

Treatment with External Fixation [PDF]
External fixation was initially used as a first aid treatment, often temporary, for fractures which were severely open or associated with polytrauma [1], More recently it has been used by some authors as the method of choice in complex fractures of the tibial pilon, and the technique has been steadily gaining in popularity [2–5].

Internal Contradictions of External Fixation. Combined External Fixation
2012The assembly of an external fixation apparatus must fully accord with the most recent developments in transosseous osteosynthesis. The experimental/theoretical and clinical knowledge base is currently such that the rigidity of bone fragment fixation in relation to the diameter of the transosseous elements used, their type and crossing angle, the ...

Early restoration of skeletal stability is a basic principle of primary orthopedic fracture care. Advantages to using external fixation are preventing future injury to the traumatized soft-tissue envelope, minimal invasive surgical technique, reducing infection risk, minimizing fracture hemorrhage, providing pain control, and facilitating medical ...
