Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

A New Type of External Fixation

open access: yesEngineering Transactions, 2015
The paper presents some problems related to external osteosynthesis. Design of the new generation of external fixators should use modelling, computer simulation and clinical postulates.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Comparison of internal and external fixation of distal radius fractures

open access: yesActa Orthopaedica, 2013
Background and purpose There is no consensus on the difference in effects of internal fixation (IF) and external fixation (EF) on outcomes for the treatment of distal radius fractures. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized clinical studies.

External fixation for comminuted phalangeal fractures: A biomechanical cadaver study

open access: yes, 1996
The mechanical rigidity obtained by external fixation in a comminuted phalangeal fracture model was assessed and the results compared with two other types of internal fixation commonly used (lateral plate and crossed Kirschner wires) in a biomechanical ...

Conversion of external fixation to internal fixation in a non-acute, reconstructive setting : a case series [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The aim of the study is to determine the outcomes in patients who underwent conversion from an external fixator to an internal fixation device. This is a retrospective review of 18 patients (24 limbs) who underwent conversion from external to ...

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Identifying gene expression signatures for risk stratification of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A novel signature integrating genome‐wide analysis with clinical factors predicts recurrence in stage II colorectal cancer and enables a new risk stratification to guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical risk stratification for postoperative recurrence in patients with pathological stage II (pStage II) colorectal cancer (CRC) is essential ...

Finite element analysis of the stability of tibiofibular fractures treated with various combinations of external fixators

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders
Background External fixators have been extensively applied in the treatment of open tibiofibular fractures and have yielded positive outcomes. The stability of an external fixator primarily hinges on its structure.
