Spalling rate of concretes subject to combined leaching and external sulfate attack
A spalling rate model is established to estimate the damage of concretes subject to the combined action of leaching and external sulfate attack (ESA). Two sub-models are developed to consider the different damage patterns. The profiles of sulfate and hydroxide ions are obtained from the solution of a dual moving boundary problem (MBP).

External sulfate attack on alkali-activated slag
Construction and Building Materials, 2013Abstract This paper analyses the effects of external sulfate attack (5% Na2SO4 solution) on mechanical and microstructural properties of alkali-activated slag (AAS). Portland-slag cement (CEM II/А-S 42.5N) was used as a benchmark material. External sulfate attack led to a decrease in strength of CEM II, but not of AAS.

A chemo-transport-damage model for concrete under external sulfate attack
Sulfate-induced deterioration can reduce the service life of a concrete structure. A coupled chemo-transport-damage model for external sulfate attack is developed, which predicts the effects of calcium leaching and temperature on the deterioration processes.

Numerical assessment of external sulfate attack in concrete structures. A review [PDF]
The slow progress of the external sulfate attack and the large size and criticality of typical structures affected by this phenomenon establish numerical modeling as a key tool to assess the future evolution of concrete structures exposed to sulfate-rich environments.

External sulfate attack: comparison of several alternative binders
Materials and Structures, 2021The aim of this work was to benchmark several binders by testing their capacity to resist external sulfate attack (ESA) under similar experimental conditions. Concrete samples were fabricated from seven different binders: two Portland cements, one blast furnace slag Portland cement, one super sulfated ground granulated blast furnace slag cement, one ...

Chemo-mechanical modelling of the external sulfate attack in concrete [PDF]
Abstract This paper is focused on the modelling of the mechanical consequences of external sulfate attack in concrete structures under partially or fully saturated conditions. To this purpose a weakly coupled approach is developed: first the moisture content is computed through a simplified diffusion model, then a reactive-diffusion model allows for ...

Influence of clinker sulfate on cement paste external sulfate attack
Advances in Cement Research, 2013This paper aims to clarify the influence of the clinker sulfate on external sulfate attack of cement paste. The investigation shows that the clinker sulfate does not have any direct influence on the resistance of cement to external sulfate attack. Indirectly this sulfate reduces the amount of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) and tricalcium silicate (C3S ...

Degradation of Concrete Structures due to External Sulfate Attack
Key Engineering Materials, 2016In this paper, we focus on the numerical simulation of degradation of concrete structures subject to External Sulfate Attack (ESA). A diffusion-reaction model is used to describe the diffusion of sulfates inside the material and the reaction with the reactive constituents of the cement paste (calcium aluminates).

External ammonium sulfate attack in concrete: Analysis of the current methodology
Construction and Building Materials, 2021Abstract The standards ASTM 1012 (2013) and NBR 13583 (2014) report the procedure for the evaluation of concrete subjected to sulfate attacks. However, the standards were based on sodium sulfate studies. This paper demonstrates that the methods suggested by the aforementioned standards may not be applicable to external attacks of ammonium sulfate ...

Simplified methodology to evaluate the external sulfate attack in concrete structures [PDF]
The external sulfate attack is a degradation process that causes expansion and cracking in concrete structures. Due to the absence of simplified methodologies to predict the potential damage, codes specify that sulfate resistant cement should be used whenever the surrounding sulfate concentration surpasses a predefined limit.
