Continuous state branching processes in random environment: The Brownian case [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We consider continuous state branching processes that are perturbed by a Brownian motion. These processes are constructed as the unique strong solution of a stochastic differential equation.

The foreknowledge of extinction [PDF]

open access: yesPostgraduate Medical Journal, 2009
We are, so far as we know, the first species that has foreseen its own extinction. In the distant past, this foreknowledge took the form of myths, including visions of Armageddon. In the last couple of centuries, however, we have been able to give precise scientific shape to such forebodings.

Amygdala Reward Neurons Form and Store Fear Extinction Memory

open access: yesNeuron, 2019
The ability to extinguish conditioned fear memory is critical for adaptive control of fear response, and its impairment is a hallmark of emotional disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Fear extinction is thought to take place when animals

Tumor‐Targeted Exosome‐Based Heavy Atom‐Free Nanosensitizers With Long‐Lived Excited States for Safe and Effective Sono‐Photodynamic Therapy of Solid Tumors

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered exosome‐based heavy atom‐free nanosensitizers are developed for safe and targeted sono‐photodynamic therapy of solid tumors. The IR820‐TPE‐loaded, biotin‐conjugated exosomes (IR820‐TPE@B‐Exo) demonstrate significant promise for NIR fluorescence imaging‐guided sono‐photodynamic cancer therapy.

Patterns of Monarch Site Occupancy and Dynamics in Iowa

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is the focus of large-scale habitat restoration efforts because of recent population declines. From 2006-2017 we monitored monarchs at >400 sites throughout Iowa to link site occupancy and colonization ...

Designing for Degradation: Transient Devices Enabled by (Nano)Cellulose

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Recent progress in transient devices enabled by (nano)cellulosic materials is reviewed. Transiency mechanisms, advantages of nanocelluloses, and a suite of applications are discussed. A circular thinking approach coupled with life cycle assessment is applied to critically revisit the potential, advantages, and challenges of nanocellulose‐enabled ...

The Near-Infrared Extinction Law in Regions of High Av

open access: yes, 2005
We present a spectroscopic study of the shape of the dust-extinction law between 1.0 and 2.2um towards a set of nine ultracompact HII regions with Av > 15 mag.

Interstellar Extinction [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysics, 2016
This review describes our current understanding of interstellar extinction. This differ substantially from the ideas of the 20th century. With infrared surveys of hundreds of millions of stars over the entire sky, such as 2MASS, SPITZER-IRAC, and WISE, we have looked at the densest and most rarefied regions of the interstellar medium at distances of a ...

Biodiversity, Extinction, and Humanity’s Future: The Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Human Population and Resource Use

open access: yesHumanities, 2013
Human actions have altered global environments and reduced biodiversity by causing extinctions and reducing the population sizes of surviving species. Increasing human population size and per capita resource use will continue to have direct and indirect ...
