Increasing environmental fluctuations can dampen variability of endogenously cycling populations

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Understanding how populations respond to increasingly variable conditions is a major objective for natural resource managers forecasting extinction risk.

A comprehensive quantitative assessment of bird extinction risk in Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
In an effort to avoid species loss, scientists have focused their efforts on the mechanisms making some species more prone to extinction than others. However, species show different responses to threats given their evolutionary history, behavior, and ...

Sexual selection and the risk of extinction in birds [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 2003
The relationship between sexual selection and extinction risk has rarely been investigated. This is unfortunate because extinction plays a key role in determining the patterns of species richness seen in extant clades, which form the basis of comparative studies into the role that sexual selection may play in promoting speciation.

Correlated Metal LaNiO3 as a p‐Type Transparent Conductor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
p‐type transparent conducting oxides are needed to enable superstrate solar cell geometries with n‐type absorbers. The p‐type correlated metal LaNiO3 combines high optical transmission with low electrical resistivity and is compatible with a range of scalable deposition processes.

Extinction risks of Amazonian plant species [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2009
Estimates of the number, and preferably the identity, of species that will be threatened by land-use change and habitat loss are an invaluable tool for setting conservation priorities. Here, we use collections data and ecoregion maps to generate spatially explicit distributions for more than 40,000 vascular plant species from the Amazon basin ...

Charge Generation and Recombination Pathways in All‐Polymer Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Multimodal spectroscopy and device analysis reveal how field‐dependent charge generation, transport limitations, and non‐geminate recombination govern performance losses in all polymer solar cells. The results identify the key processes controlling charge extraction and recombination, providing insights for the design of more efficient all‐polymer ...

Bismuth‐Based Photocatalysts for Water Remediation: Design Strategies, Mechanisms, and Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights representative design strategies for bismuth‐based semiconductor photocatalysts in solar‐driven water purification. Emphasis is placed on electronic structure regulation, oxygen‐vacancy engineering, and interfacial coupling to enable efficient full‐spectrum light utilization, improved charge separation, and selective oxidation in

Using Global Red List Data to Inform Localised Research and Conservation Priorities—A Case Study in the Republic of Seychelles

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
Global Red List assessments are powerful tools for informing large-scale conservation decision-making processes, however, they can also be used to inform more localised research and conservation priorities.

Risk, Non-Identity, and Extinction

open access: yesThe Monist
Abstract This paper examines a recent argument in favour of strong precautionary action—possibly including working to hasten human extinction—on the basis of a decision-theoretic view that accommodates the risk-attitudes of all affected while giving more weight to the more risk-averse attitudes.
