The most favourable locations for the development of saline lakes are in the rain-shadow of mountain ranges, which provide large areas of precipitation catchment while the base of the basin is under arid climate and exposed to evaporation. These conditions are found in Extra-Andean Patagonia under the rain-shadow generated by the Andean cordillera ...

Slab window basalt cycles in extra-Andean Patagonia formed in a main-plateau and a post-plateau stage, during glacial and interglacial events. Here, we provide field, geochemical and geochronological data of Pliocene basalts and volcanoes from the north of Viedma lake (49° 20′–49° 30′ S).

Abstract The Somun Cura Magmatic Province (SCMP) is a Cenozoic volcanic region comprised by several basaltic fields and large central volcanoes located at the Northern Extra-Andean Patagonia, Argentina. The principal volcanic sequences were erupted between the late Eocene and late Miocene, forming the Meseta de Somun Cura, which covers ~30,000 km2 ...

Abstract Late Pleistocene palaeolakes on the eastern side of Andes (glacial lakes) and in the Patagonian Steppe (pluvial lakes) along 41°S latitude were studied. Natural dams (glaciers, moraines) that maintained a high water level in glacial palaeolakes were melted or cut by erosion during Late Pleistocene climate amelioration.

Late Cenozoic Geohydrology of Extra-Andean Patagonia, Argentina
2008Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the role played by Late Cenozoic rocks and sediments of continental extra-Andean Patagonia in the geohydrological processes. They act not only as carriers of usable underground water but mainly as participant in recharge mechanisms to other formations of older age as well as support for highly fragile ...

Abstract Paleoenvironmental changes during the Late-glacial transition are interpreted from a pollen record from two caves at Los Toldos (47°22′S; 68°58′W) in Extra-Andean Patagonia in Argentina. The paleoenvironmental interpretation is based on changes in the ratio between shrub and grass steppe taxa and on comparison with other pollen records from ...

Vegetational changes during the Holocene in Extra-Andean Patagonia, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina
Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 1998Abstract Modern pollen-vegetation relationship was used in the interpretation of stratigraphical sequences from two archeological sites, La Martita cave (48°24′S, 69°15′W) and Alero Cardenas (47°18′S, 70°26′W) located in Extra-Andean Patagonia in the Santa Cruz Province.

When tableland flows: flow-type landslides in the extra-Andean Patagonia
Landslides in volcanic and sedimentary tablelands rank among the largest mass movement phenomena globally, yet their spatial patterns and prevailing mechanisms remain insufficiently investigated. Our landslide inventory, covering 517,000 km² of volcanic tableland in extra-Andean Patagonia, provides insight into the spatial distribution of ...Jakub Kilnar +3 more

Legume Diversity in the Extra Andean Patagonia
2012Patagonia is one of the few cold temperate semiarid regions of the world. This territory extends from latitude 40 to 55 ֯ and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andean piedmont in the west, and occupies nearly 786.000 km2 in the southern portion of Argentina.
