On geological timescales, the volume of CO2 in the atmosphere is influenced by processes such as silicate weathering. In particular, the weathering of basaltic rocks increase the availability of divalent cations such as Mg2+ and Ca2+ in natural waters enabling carbonate formation under atmospheric conditions.
