Field evaluations of thermal optics and tracking tunnels for small mammal surveys at airports and grass dominated habitats

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Small mammal survey tools are needed at airports to help inform aircraft strike‐risk management. We evaluated thermal optics and tracking tunnels as small mammal survey tools. We conclude that thermal optics would not be a viable survey tool for mouse‐sized mammals (19‐41 g) at airfields and other thick grass habitats unless grass height was maintained

Remotely enabling live traps for mesopredator capture: Potential benefits and use of time‐controlled trap access

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
A method is described for remotely controlling the interval of time available for live trap animal capture using a programmable door which controls animal access to a readied live trap within a housing structure. Based on management objectives or other considerations, utilities include the ability to eliminate repeat site visits in some contexts to set

Mirror alignment by particle swarm optimization for synchrotron radiation beamlines

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
A particle swarm optimization‐based automated two‐mirror alignment method was developed to restore high‐flux beams in approximately 5 min, and its 15 month deployment demonstrated its robustness and reliability. This article proposes a particle swarm optimization (PSO)‐based automated mirror‐alignment methodology that enables the utilization of high ...

HOST MATTER: Parasite infection drives chemical reconfiguration of decomposing host and shapes insect behavioural responses

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Host–parasite interactions shape ecosystems by driving species dynamics, yet their influence is typically considered in terms of host mortality rather than the chemical environments generated during infection and decomposition.

Root‐associated fungi modulate plant recruitment in Mediterranean forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Established plants affect directly and indirectly the success of juvenile plants recruiting in their close vicinity, what is defined as a canopy–recruit interaction. Such interactions affect plant species demography and community dynamics.
