Anticoagulants and Extracorporeal Circuits
Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 1997Anticoagulants are pivotal to achieve circulation in extracorporeal circuits. In this review we discuss several anticoagulants in clinical use or in the preclinical phase. In hemodialysis the low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) appear to be as effective and safe as standard heparin (SH).

The future of extracorporeal support
Critical Care Medicine, 2008Extracorporeal therapy has expanded significantly over the past few decades from solely artificial renal replacement therapy. In patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, it becomes necessary to provide multiple organ support therapy. Technological advances have opened the door to a multifaceted intervention directed at supporting the function

Refinements in Extracorporal Septoplasty
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1999Septal deviations interfere with nasal airflow and contribute to deformities in the external appearance of the nose. An aesthetically and functionally satisfactory correction of severe septal deformities or "crippled" septal plates often requires a temporary intraoperative removal of the septal cartilage for appropriate remodeling.

Extracorporeal Photochemotherapy (Extracorporal Photophoresis)
2000Extracorporeal photo chemotherapy (or photophoresis) is a rather new light-based biological therapeutic method, which was originally developed exclusively to treat the pathologically altered cells of cutaneous malignant T-cell lymphoma outside the body, using a light sensitizer and long-wave ultraviolet irradiation.

Extracorporeal photochemotherapy
Journal of Dermatological Science, 2009Although extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP) is reported to be effective for a wide variety of diseases, such as cutaneous T cell lymphoma, autoimmune diseases, organ graft rejection, and graft versus host disease, its mechanism of action remains unclear. The basis of extracorporeal photopheresis is the reinfusion of leukocytes previously exposed to

[Extracorporeal photochemotherapy].
Transfusion clinique et biologique : journal de la Societe francaise de transfusion sanguine, 2010Photopheresis or extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP) is a cellular therapy which combines a leukapheresis followed by ex vivo treatment using psoralen and ultraviolet A irradiation before reinfusion into the patient. Its mechanisms of action remain unclear and selective photodestruction of leukocytes cannot explain the long-lasting immunomodulatory ...

#### Summary points Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is a variation of cardiopulmonary bypass. Whereas cardiopulmonary bypass facilitates open heart surgery for a number of hours, extracorporeal life support maintains tissue oxygenation for days to weeks in patients with life threatening respiratory or cardiac failure (or both).

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 1992Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is still a relatively new technology that has recently achieved recognition after initial clinical disappointment in the late 1970s. At present, it is considered standard therapy for the full-term infant with PPHN who fails CMV and extraordinary, heroic therapy for older children and adults with ARF or cardiac ...

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation and Extracorporeal Life Support
2021Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-sustaining procedure that can provide temporary support for patients with severe cardiogenic shock or respiratory failure. The following chapter will discuss the indications, contraindications, as well as a step by step approach on how to perform the procedure.

Extracorporeal Circulation in Puppies
Archives of Surgery, 1965DESPITE increasing success in intracardiac surgery in the young infant, mortality rates are still high. Among the difficulties inherent in such surgery, extracorporeal circulation in young, small individuals plays a prominent role. For this reason, experience with cardiopulmonary bypass in small animals is essential for successful intracardiac surgery ...
