Virtual Extracorporeal Circulation Process
The International Journal of Artificial Organs, 1997Virtual instruments for an extracorporeal circulation (ECC) process were developed to simulate the reactions of a patient to different artificial perfusion conditions. The computer simulation of the patient takes into account the hydraulic, volume, thermal and biochemical phenomena and their interaction with the devices involved in ECC (cannulae ...

Oxygenators for Extracorporeal Circulation [PDF]
It is difficult to single out one development in the science of extracorporeal circulation that made possible the current achievements in cardiac surgery. But the artificial lung, or “oxygenator,” is certainly a key component in the performance of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

Biocompatibility of extracorporeal circulation with autooxygenation
European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, 1992Platelet damage, complement activation and neutropenia during cardiopulmonary bypass are the result of blood contact with artificial surfaces, mainly in the oxygenator. To evaluate biocompatibility of this kind of bypass we compared two techniques of extracorporeal circulation in 40 patients undergoing elective coronary bypass operations.

Shock and extracorporeal circulation
1962For several years the great problem in E. C. C. was the immediate fall in blood pressure when total perfusion started. Large transfusions and noradrenaline were necessary to maintain a satisfactory arterial blood pressure; then, some hours after the perfusions, most of the experimental animals died in irreversible shock.

Hemodynamics and Extracorporeal Circulation
2019Peripheral veno-arterial membrane oxygenation (PVA-ECMO) is increasingly used as first-line therapy during refractory cardiogenic shock. It is responsible for striking changes in patient’s hemodynamics. They are mostly related to the retrograde direction of the ECMO blood flow in the aorta, responsible for a massive increase in cardiac afterload and a ...

Inflammatory response and extracorporeal circulation
Best Practice & Research Clinical Anaesthesiology, 2015Patients undergoing cardiac surgery with extracorporeal circulation (EC) frequently develop a systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Surgical trauma, ischaemia-reperfusion injury, endotoxaemia and blood contact to nonendothelial circuit compounds promote the activation of coagulation pathways, complement factors and a cellular immune response.

Hepatectomy under extracorporeal circulation
Surgery, 1995Resection of hepatic tumors located near the confluence of the hepatic vein or invading the inferior vena cava has become technically feasible and relatively safe by using venovenous bypass. However, some technical problems remain to be solved. We performed three cases of hepatic resection under extracorporeal circulation combined with hypothermic ...

Extracorporeal Circulation Without Bleeding
Science Translational Medicine, 2014A newly created antibody protects against blood coagulation in extracorporeal bypass systems without bleeding risk in vivo.

Extracorporeal circulation in 2050: a speculation
Perfusion, 2003In 2050, a 60-year-old (middle-aged) man has a large myocardial infarction. As he collapses, he vomits and aspirates gastric contents. He has two episodes of ventricular fibrillation, but is successfully defibrillated by his wife. Twelve hours later, he is in the 200-bed intensive care hospital (all inpatient beds are intensive care beds).
