Association of Aortic Root and Valve Morphology With De Novo Aortic Valve Regurgitation After Implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Device

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Large preoperative aortic virtual basal ring diameter to geometric height ratio may be a novel risk factor for de novo aortic insufficiency after durable LVAD implantation and assist in determining surgical indications for concomitant aortic valve procedures with LVAD implantation.

Simultaneous Ex Situ Normothermic Perfusion of Paired Kidneys in Pigs

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
This pig model of simultaneous perfusion of paired kidneys in normothermia suggests that intra‐individual variation is relatively low, enabling one kidney to be employed as a reliable comparator of the other kidney for assessing treatments before kidney transplantation.

Infants With a Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Had Favourable Pulmonary Hypertension Outcomes at 1 Year of Age

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim Pulmonary hypertension is frequent in neonates with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, but long‐term data have been scarce. Our aim was to examine its prevalence, evolution and management and identify factors associated with its persistence.

In Vivo Quantification of Clot Formation in Extracorporeal Circuits [PDF]

open access: yesStudies in Health Technology and Informatics, Vol. 184, pp. 148--150, January 2013, 2012
Clot formation is a common complication in extracorporeal circuits. In this paper we describe a novel method for clot formation analysis using image processing. We assembled a closed extracorporeal circuit and circulated blood at varying speeds. Blood filters were placed in downstream of the flow, and clotting agents were added to the circuit.

Approach to the Management of Gastrointestinal Manifestations in Patients With Phaeochromocytoma and Paraganglioma

open access: yesClinical Endocrinology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Managing gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) is challenging due to the risk of catecholaminergic crisis with many commonly prescribed medications, especially in functional tumours.

A case of testicular tumor and respiratory failure caused by choriocarcinoma syndrome managed through modified chemotherapy and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

open access: yesIJU Case Reports
Introduction Choriocarcinoma syndrome with multiple lung metastases has a poor prognosis and causes respiratory failure due to alveolar hemorrhage. We encountered a case where the introduction of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation effectively sustained ...

On the Non-Oxygenic Origins of Thylakoids [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Thylakoid membranes are the site of oxygenic photosynthesis, one of the most important biochemical processes on earth. The ancestral state of these membranes is represented today in Gloeobacterales, where they are lacking and photosynthesis instead takes place in the cytoplasmic membrane.

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia–Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome: A review of published cases

open access: yesHIV Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) can occur in patients with HIV after commencing antiretroviral therapy. Tuberculosis–IRIS is the most common, and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP)–IRIS accounts for only 2.7%–4% of IRIS cases.

Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is a method of resuscitation in which venoarterial (VA) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) is initiated during refractory cardiac arrest. ECPR promises to enhance outcomes after cardiac arrest by
