Imaging adults on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) [PDF]

open access: yesInsights into Imaging, 2014
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is increasingly being used in adults following failure to wean from cardiopulmonary bypass, after cardiac surgery or in cases of severe respiratory failure. Knowledge of the different types of ECMO circuits, expected locations of cannulas and imaging appearance of complications is essential for accurate ...

Bedside troubleshooting during venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Thoracic Disease, 2019
In this review, we discuss common difficulties that clinicians may encounter while managing patients treated with venovenous (VV) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO is an increasingly important tool for managing severe respiratory failure that is refractory to conventional therapies.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Cardiopulmonary Support in Infancy

open access: yesThe Journal of ExtraCorporeal Technology, 1979
We have used prolonged extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the treatment of 13 moribund infants (including 9 neonates), with 4 survivors (3 neonates). Successfully treated cases include post-operative cardiac failure, infant respiratory distress syndrome, massive meconium aspiration, and persistent fetal circulation.

North American Neonatal Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Devices: 2002 Survey Results [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe journal of extra-corporeal technology, 2004
In mid 2002, surveys of active extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) centers in the United States and Canada were conducted via E-mail regarding neonatal equipment and personnel. Seventy-four out of 99 (75%) North American ECMO centers listed in the

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in COVID-19 patients: a pocket guide for radiologists

open access: yesLa radiologia medica, 2022
During the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been proposed as a possible therapy for COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): What We Need to Know

open access: yesCureus, 2022
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a form of circulatory support used in patients with refractory cardiac and/or respiratory failure. The main role of such support is to allow the lungs and heart to rest and heal while providing adequate ...

A numerical study of the hemodynamic behavior and gas transport in cardiovascular systems with severe cardiac or cardiopulmonary failure supported by venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2023
Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) has been extensively demonstrated as an effective means of bridge-to-destination in the treatment of patients with severe ventricular failure or cardiopulmonary failure.

Thrombosis and Bleeding in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Without Anticoagulation: A Systematic Review.

open access: yesASAIO journal (1992), 2020
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) causes both thrombosis and bleeding. Major society guidelines recommend continuous, systemic anticoagulation to prevent thrombosis of the ECMO circuit, though this may be undesirable in those with active, or ...
