Extraction and chemistry of cochineal

Food Chemistry, 1980
Abstract The study of ‘cochineal’ for use in food involves a wide range of unexpected disciplines. The importance of the historical, geographical and entomological backgrounds is emphasised. The chemistry of carminic acid and related hydroxyanthraquinones is shown to have been confused by the early work of Liebermann & Voswinckel (1897), but evidence

Memrane extraction in analytical chemistry

Journal of Separation Science, 2001
In this paper the principles and application of porous and non-porous membrane extraction techniques for sample preparation (pretreatment) in analytical chemistry are reviewed, with emphasis on aqueous samples of biological, environmental, or food origin.

Anthocyanins—Occurrence, extraction and chemistry

Food Chemistry, 1980
Abstract This paper deals with those aspects of anthocyanins particularly related to beverages. The anthocyanins are briefly discussed and those present in some fruits are listed. pH is shown to affect the colour of anthocyanins, but various means of stabilisation are given.

Pituitary Gonadotropins—Chemistry, Extraction, and Immunoassay

1971
Publisher Summary This chapter examines the current status of immunological assays used to measure the pituitary gonadotropic hormones. All immunoassays basically depend on the interaction of an antigen of unique identity and its specific antibody. It is also necessary to discuss the chemical nature of the various preparations of Follicle stimulating

Chemistry and pharmacology of an ethanol extract of Bumelia sartorum

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 1985
Bumelia sartorum has been mentioned in Brazilian folklore for its reputed use in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and inflammatory disorders. An ethanol extract of root bark elicited a hypoglycemic effect in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. In addition, the extract altered glucose tolerance in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, enhanced glucose ...

Analytical Chemistry in a Drop. Solvent Extraction in a Microdrop

Analytical Chemistry, 1996
An organic microdrop (∼1.3 μL) is suspended inside a flowing aqueous drop from which the analyte is extracted. The drop-in-drop system is achieved by a multitube assembly. The aqueous phase is continuously delivered to the outer drop and is aspirated away from the bottom meniscus of the drop.

Coordination chemistry in the ocean

Nature Chemistry, 2014
The amount of uranium in seawater vastly exceeds that in land-based deposits; but separating it from other more abundant metal ions requires high affinity, selectivity — and the ability to deal with an enormous volume of water. Now, two complementary approaches have made considerable contributions to overcoming these challenges.

Chemistry of Wort Boiling and Hop Extraction

1982
Wort boiling may be regarded as the turning-point in the brewing of beers; it is omitted in distilling and vinegar brewing. At its simplest, in Bavarian practice, the all malt wort is boiled with hops for 1–2 hr, no other additions being permitted by aw.
